Manuel Zelaya to return as Honduras president

Honduras' interim government has buckled under international pressure and agreed to allow the return to power of Manuel Zelaya, the ousted President who was toppled in a military coup four months ago.

The breakthrough followed renewed pressure from senior US. officials who traveled to Honduras this week for a last-ditch effort to end the crisis.

"It is a triumph for Honduran democracy," said Mr Zelaya after the rival sides agreed to a deal that could see him reinstated as President in the coming days.

Earlier, Roberto Micheletti, the president of the interim government that took power after the coup on June 28 announced that he had agreed to reinstate his political rival

"I am pleased to announce that a few minutes ago my negotiating team signed an agreement that marks the beginning of the end" of the four-month standoff, Mr Micheletti said in a statement from the presidential palace.

Mr Zelaya was sent into exile at gunpoint on June 28 but returned secretly to Honduras last month where he has taken refuge in the Brazilian embassy.

Mr Micheletti said Zelaya could return to office after a vote in Congress that would be authorised by the country's Supreme Court. He said the deal would require both sides to recognize the result of a presidential election due to take place on November 29 and would transfer control of the army to the top electoral court.

The United States, the European Union and Latin American leaders had all insisted that Zelaya be allowed to finish his presidential term, which ends in January. They had said they might not recognize the winner of the November election unless democracy was first restored.

The BBC is framing it as a “power sharing agreement.”

In any case, it seems that they will have free elections in a month and both Micheletti and Zelaya will be out of office in January.

of course its the best and its a good thing Honduras held out as long as they did. Zelaya will only have 2 months in office and everyone watching him.

Outstanding...the US is successful in diplomacy...at restoring a wannabe dictator back in office...after he was constitutionally removed from office. Dang any constitution that gets in the way of mob rule.

Yes, all it is The Chicago Way works on weak dependent democracies when the full might, majesty, dominion, power and glory of the USA is brought to bear. Never mind that Iran, Taliban, China, Russia et al just say “shove it” and Obama runs with his tail between his legs.

It reinforces the feeling south of the border that El Gringo is the man and you better not get out of line.

,i he won't be pres after Nov. 29Unless the deal forced by the US is more onerous than it appears. What did we threaten the constitutional government of Honduras with? And since Honduras is "on our side" threats made behind the scenes would be eminently believable, unlike threats to Iran. Bwing pro American and anti socialist is highly dangerous to a small country, especially if it is clse to the US. .

"toppled in a military coup False."

The Obammunist had to cave (the ball is in Honduras Congress and Supreme Court hands) after the

Directorate of Legal Research filed it's REPORT FOR CONGRESS - HONDURAS: CONSTITUTIONAL LAW ISSUES
This report discusses the legal basis under the Honduran Constitution for President José Manuel Zelaya Rosales’s removal from office.

This report was made public. It was requested by the United States Congress. It was sent to the U.S. Supreme Court.

It said Honduras acted in accordance with it own Constitution.

So Zelaya is not president of Honduras. The Honduras Congress and Supreme Court have agreed to do the same process all over again, just like they did before.

The Kenyan loses.

Scary indeed. Ortega has just, with Chavez’ able assistance, become president for life. Nicaragua too has, or had, a one term limit in its constitution. It is unlikely that Zelaya will recognize a the results of the November election. With Obama's and Chavez' help a crisis will be created to justify the disolution of Honduras' government. Obama has directly caused the overthrow of a constitutional republic at a time when Communists are again taking countries in South and Central America. We are, for the time being, alligned with and assisting with Communist takeovers.

When the remaining Central American countries fall, we will face a much larger Cuba, with lots of oil, with missiles from North Korea and nuclear technology from Iran to our south. It could take 70 or more years (as our left wing helped Castro to oust Babtista in 1959) for Hondurans to regain the rights we, the United States, have taken from them. Castro destroyed the country with the highest standard of living in Latin America. Honduras was dealing with a Chavez ally, a tyrant, and has a constitution which successfully and legally protected them. Our British chief executive (not legally a president) has aligned us with Chavez (for whom Ayers son works or worked), and destroyed the constitutional government of our small neighbor. If anyone thinks that wasn't their intention, pay attention for the next month.

Obama and the forces behind him are finding it easier to impose Marxism on smaller contries than on the U.S. Here he must first destroy the economy. But Obama alligned with Chavez, Castro, Ortega, Ahmadenijad, will hasten the takeover of weaker countries in Latin America. Chavez troops didn't need to cross the border. Sending Hillary and John Kerry did the trick.

Not even that. He is a non entity until the Congress votes on something and the Honduras Supreme court agrees. Might take til December.

HEHE! Very smart. They let the clown in "officially" for 2 weeks just to pacify everyone and then he's gone. The people voted for someone else. It's BYE, BYE!

Zelaya will mind his P’s and Q’s, because what he wants is to be able to protect his money interests and property in Honduras, and be able to continue to live in the country. One wrong move on his part and he will be exiled from Honduras, and the next time if he would try to come back in the country, there would be a jail or a bullet waiting for him.

So Zelaya has a lot to lose, namely living in his own country where his relatives and business interests are located. And if he doesn’t go peacefully into the night, he knows he will be a marked man in his own country, and someone, somewhere, sometime, will take him out. Methinks he will be very, very careful in his moves, unless, of course, he is nutz, which is a distinct possibility, considering some of the totally irrational comments that have come out of his mouth, like the Jooooooos were out to get him. One can never disallow the possibility that he is a tad loco.

Zelaya is limited to one term. He got in trouble because he tried to go against the constitution. Zelaya is the same as Chavez. He tried to violate the Constitution and was ordered arrested by the the Supreme court of Honduras. Looks like Zelaya is going to buffalo his way into president for life like Chavez.

Obama is reversing the progress made by Reagan in the 1980s in South America.

If zelaya doesn’t mind his P’s and Q’s he’ll be out on his ear for good.

I think Honduras learned their lesson about just throwing him out. If he tries to seize power again, he'll be lucky to end up IN the jail, rather than UNDER it.
