Honduras' interim government has buckled under international pressure and agreed to allow the return to power of Manuel Zelaya, the ousted President who was toppled in a military coup four months ago.
The breakthrough followed renewed pressure from senior US. officials who traveled to Honduras this week for a last-ditch effort to end the crisis.
"It is a triumph for Honduran democracy," said Mr Zelaya after the rival sides agreed to a deal that could see him reinstated as President in the coming days.
Earlier, Roberto Micheletti, the president of the interim government that took power after the coup on June 28 announced that he had agreed to reinstate his political rival
"I am pleased to announce that a few minutes ago my negotiating team signed an agreement that marks the beginning of the end" of the four-month standoff, Mr Micheletti said in a statement from the presidential palace.
Mr Zelaya was sent into exile at gunpoint on June 28 but returned secretly to Honduras last month where he has taken refuge in the Brazilian embassy.
Mr Micheletti said Zelaya could return to office after a vote in Congress that would be authorised by the country's Supreme Court. He said the deal would require both sides to recognize the result of a presidential election due to take place on November 29 and would transfer control of the army to the top electoral court.
The United States, the European Union and Latin American leaders had all insisted that Zelaya be allowed to finish his presidential term, which ends in January. They had said they might not recognize the winner of the November election unless democracy was first restored.

When does his term end, and when is the election supposed to occur?
The elections are scheduled four weeks away, on November 29.
There is this interesting part of the article, not reflected in the headline:

There is a presidential election November 29, Zelya cannot be a candidate. In any event he won't be pres after Nov. 29.

Best part is it gets him out of the Brazilian Embassy where the Hondurans can get their hands on him if he starts making like a tin god again.
I do not think they will be so nice to him the second time.

Not even that. He is a non entity until the Congress votes on something and the Honduras Supreme court agrees. Might take til December.

This is beyond sickening. I think they’re holding out a carrot to deny the pressuring countries their threat to refuse to acknowledge the results of the election - a Clintonian punishment that is completely unjustified and a direct rejection of the democratic process supposedly so beloved by the snarling communists trying to shove Zelaya back down Honduras’ throat.
I’ll say one thing, the guy has to be gutsy, blind, or so et up with the power thing that he doesn’t see what you do. Or he just thinks Mr Obama is going to save his socialist rear end. Calling 911 should do it.
I think it will tale a week+ to get the vote approved leaving him in office for only 3 weeks. The military will watch him like a hawk. If he tries something, I predict they will shoot him on the spot!
OTOH This is a very scary scenario. A democratic country in our hemisphere being threatened by socialist governments starting with the USA.
If he brings in Chavez for a visit all bets are off on hin making it out alive!
