SAN YSIDRO With the San Ysidro border fence as her backdrop, Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman spoke out on immigration policy issues yesterday, saying it is simply not practical to deport the estimated 12.5 million illegal immigrants living and working in the United States.
The candidate, 53, said the solution is to find a mechanism that allows them to live here legally. Can we get a fair program where people stand at the back of the line, they pay a fine, they do some things that would ultimately allow a path to legalization? she asked.
Whitman also urged tougher measures against those who hire undocumented workers, and said that as governor I would be an advocate . . . for the people of California to make sure we really do secure this border.
The former chief executive of online auction company eBay made her remarks after a two-hour ride-along with two U.S. Border Patrol agents.
Though immigration is a federal issue, the governor has to weigh in much more heavily on getting the federal government to fulfill its responsibility of paying for border control, of helping to pay for illegal immigrants that are in our prisons, Whitman said.
Since declaring her candidacy in February, Whitman has spoken on immigration issues several times. She has said that had she lived in California in 1994, she would have voted against Proposition 187, a measure intended to deny education, health care and other services to illegal immigrants. Voters passed it, but its major provisions were overturned in court.
Others seeking the Republican nomination are Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and former Rep. Tom Campbell.
The Democratic candidates are Attorney General Jerry Brown and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Yesterday, Whitman reiterated her opposition to sanctuary cities, which pass local resolutions to protect illegal immigrants in their jurisdictions.
During her tour of the border, Whitman said agents told her they had enough people in the sector but wanted more technology, such as infrared cameras, to do their job.
The border tour increased my sense of urgency, and wanting to make sure that the federal government takes responsibility for the resources to get the job done, Whitman said.
Rampant new RINO *ping*.
seismically or politically?
;-)
soon,, all one can do is be as best prepared as one can.
Meg is obviously way beyond RINOdom ~ she’s a slaver ~ prepared to create a formal and legally unassailable second-class of citizenship so that her friends can continue to bring in more and more foreigners to pay them less and less.
Campbell looks pretty strong on illegals, at least as his website .
A physical barrier needs to be across the entire border, but we can at least do our part in California; and if the federal government wont pay for it, we will handle our own portion.
... But securing the border has to come first, because any grant of privileges invites more illegal entry.
I also believe that those who broke our laws to enter our country should not be permitted to stay. Amnesty programs invite future illegal entry.
The lowest reliable estimates Ive seen are that illegal immigration costs our state 3 billion dollars a year...
Meg was here in San Diego yesterday.
I like the secure the border , and going after the people who help cause the illegals to come her, the idiots who give them jobs.
The get to the back of the line go through the process legally is not my choice BUT, the other option: who are the thousands of people going be to search inch by inch all over the U.S. to find over 12 million illegals while they
are on the move to not be picked up.
Doing this while MSM, liberal orgainzations, etc. make this
a TV event, cameral following the search parties all over the U.S. picking up the illegals over a period of
a few years. Only the liberals won’t just watch on TV, they will go through courts, the blow back will be ugly
in the streets and in the end what few of the over 12 million are picked up are going no place.
I would like to see them all go back but the above is the reality.
I live in San Diego, 20 miles north of the largest and busiest border crossing in the world. S.D. - Tijuana
Now I can remember which one was being lauded as a potential candidate. LOL!
Neither I guess?
JUST DO IT!
Get them just like law enforcement goes after speeders ---ONE AT A TIME!
we already have a path to legalization. it begins at the border, where a person enters the country legally and applies for citizenship or resident alien status. are we going to give refunds to all the fools who paid us for those things after we toss free citizenship to anyone who ignores our laws?
RINO's in love.....
When you say Californians, you are saying a fraction of the population such as myself being a native here.
Most everyone else here are from other states including yours.
You are saying the largest concentration of military in the world here in San Diego that they should kill themselves.
You are saying to JR and FR to do the same.
At least CAlifornia had Reagan for Governor for 8 years
while you had George Wallace and the other Democrats
“...Can we get a fair program...” FAIR TO WHO, surely not the American tax payer!
Kick the ILLEGAL ALIEN BASTARDS and BREADERS out and have them get in line!
1. Free Republic is a native Californian. Ask Jim Robinson.
2. Excluse ME, pal, but people who moved here FROM THE EAST -- the Nancy Pelosis, the Barbara Boxers, the Diane Feinsteins -- screwed it up. Not to mention millions of American elites from the East and Midwest who began invading California in the early '60s after adventurous, risk-taking smart liberty-loving conservatives, like my great grandparents, made this state a cool and prosperous place to be.
There is a path already.
1. Go home.
2. Fill out proper paperwork and send it in.
3. Learn to speak English.
4. Get in line and wait.
5. Answer when your name is called.
6. Get Visa, move to America.
7. Get a farkin’ job, pay taxes, obey the law, study for Citizenship exam.
etc., etc., etc.
Follow the process. The process will set you free and make all of your dreams come true.
Under this plan, who would be doing the background checks? Would it be done by our inefficient and understaffed federal government? Or in the case of background checks on Mexican illegal aliens, would it be done by the corrupt Mexican government who would tell us anything we'd want to hear in order to keep us from sending back any of their citizens who are illegally in the United States?
the path leads directly to the door of the US Embassy in Mexico City where you can fill out an application and wait to come legally like everyone else
Go to hell, Smeg.
I think we need to have a bigger quota for quality people. I'd measure that by level of education, net worth, lack of a criminal record, an ability to speak English, and a firm desire and committment to become an American, not necessarily in that order.
What we don't need are parasites who come here to take all they can, who breed like rabbits and who break the laws. Regardless of native country.
I want the parasites, and their anchor babies if they have any, deported forthwith.
Meg Whitman is pro-abortion AND pro-amnesty for illegal aliens.
Guess I’ll be looking for another candidate to vote for next year...
