Is the recession over?

The U.S. economy expanded in the third quarter for the first time in more than a year thanks to a bounce back in consumer spending, but a weak labor market is expected to keep the recovery subdued.

Gross domestic product rose by a higher-than-expected seasonally adjusted 3.5% annual rate July through September, the Commerce Department said Thursday in its first estimate of third-quarter GDP.

Denninger debunks this quite handily this morning:

GDP Is..... Better Than Expected?

It's all smoke and mirrors.

The AP story on this is hilarious. Just one nugget:

A top concern is whether the economy can continue to stand on its own feet after government supports are gone.

Many economists predict economic activity won't grow as much in the months ahead as the bracing impact of President Barack Obama's $787 billion package of increased government spending and tax cuts fades.

Gee, ya think?

Reminds me of the pictures of Bagdahd Bob during the first Gulf War. Bombs raining down but he was saying the Republican guard was defeating the infidels.

Not in the nation either- If you look at the U6 stats instead of the U3 the govt uses. Sounds like arizona finally looked at the actual stats (U6) because that is the one that counts marginally, discouraged, temp or part timers and those who have been looking for work without success.

All those folds exhausting unemployment bennies are not finding work, they are finding welfare next. Now that would be an interesting stat, how much have the welfare roles expanded in the last several months, as the unemployed exhausted the bennies.....

Gov’mint jobs don’t count. Taxpayer dollars are being spent while consumers are holding on to their wallets. Wait until all the tax increases start in 2010.

It’s frightening that the government lies about this stuff — and thinks that it can get away with it.

I read over a week ago that Arizona will have to borrow from the Feds to continue to pay unemployment benefits or they will run out of funds by March, 2010, I believe it was.

It is not getting better at all. I am one of those still searching for a job but no longer on unemployment. It is a very tight market and even though interviews have gone very well, you think this is the one, and poof, you don’t get hired. It is discouraging but there are so many other people lining up for the same job.

All of this is from Cash for Clunkers

They are cheating us -— no big surprise there, right?

The plane is barely flying without power. The liberal pulls up the stick and the altimeter shows a climb. The liberal claims “See, we’re safe now.”

The conservative (who actually knows how to fly) knows that the stall and spin is only a few seconds away.

And so goes the world under the “leadership” of those who have never done anything.

The stories today from the AP are a travesty...it is surreal how no one in the media cares about the truth nor this administration.

This is a perception play to try once again to stave off the impeding continued market correction - it is going to happen one way or another.

The only way to stop a recession is through sustainable production and with production comes an increase in job growth.

None of what has been done this year is sustainable and we are still losing jobs at a terminal rate and our money supply has increased 120% - the day of reckoning is coming and this Obama train wreck is going to be a disaster.

If the reporters at the AP understood anything they would be reporting the truth that the home buyer credit and cash for clunkers has created a very temporary lift to the GDP, home prices and automobile purchases however if we don’t find a sustainable way to increase production the Q4 results will be negative again.

The government did the same stupid things during the Great Depression and ultimately stretched out the pain for decades.

Wouldn’t it better to let it correct in a 24 month period than to extend this nightmare into a 30 year problem - because the negative impact of the increase in the money supply is going to make the housing debacle look like the Reagan years...

A financial holocaust is brewing and the people in power right now are the perps making it happen.

My prayers go out to you. I, too am unemployed. I left my current position for a reason that I am sure is going to start to get traction after we get out of this mess. Employer abuse. It will not be talked about right now, but many of the employers out there know there aren’t many jobs and they are doing things they would never be able to get away with in better times.

Fortunately, hubby makes enough for us to just eek by, and I will continue to look for work. My heart goes out to those without work. My brother has been out 8 months now, with no prospects, and he was the VP of a large HVAC company. Hubby was out last year for 4 months after our company folded. My sister and her hubbys company folded and they are going bankcrupt and losing their home. I seriously doubt that any in this country have not been affected by something like these examples. THAT is bad!

I sympathize with people who have lost jobs, lose their homes and now what?

I just don’t see how people are going to recover from this if they are totally broke and lose everything.

On the other hand, I can honestly say that God has provided for us in ways I could not have imagined.
