Wal-Mart starts selling caskets, urns online

MILWAUKEE – The world's largest retailer wants to keep its customers even after they die.
Wal-Mart has started selling caskets on its Web site at prices that undercut many funeral homes, long the major seller of caskets.
The move follows a similar one by discount rival Costco, which also sells caskets on its site.
Wal-Mart, based in Bentonville, Ark., quietly put up about 15 caskets and dozens of urns on its Web site last week. Prices range from $999 for models like "Dad Remembered" and "Mom Remembered" steel caskets to the mid-level $1,699 "Executive Privilege." All are less than $2,000, except for the Sienna Bronze Casket, which sells for $3,199.

She said she wanted to pick out a modestly priced casket for herself while we were there, to avoid us overpaying for it while we were grieving when she passes.
But then she starts looking at really expensive caskets for my step Dad. I asked her if she remembered what we talked about on the drive over, and she snapped out of it and started looking at more modestly priced caskets for him too.
Not bargain basement stuff, but more middle of the road in price.
I agree with that. I told my wife if she overpays for a casket or anything if I die first I'm going to haunt her and make her wish she hadn't.
Because hey, if you're dead you have bigger problems than worrying about how much your loved ones paid for your casket right? ;)
Be careful with the WalMart urn sizes. They appear to run small.
Is it just me, or does putting ashes in a biodegradable urn seem like the opposite of wearing both a belt and suspenders?
In woodworking magazines I’ve seen plans for coffee table / coffin combinations (removable top).
I like more room in my bed than I’ll need in a coffin.
Would hate to see chinese made caskets.....probably made of balsa wood.
I expect to see the more corrupt members of the Utah legislature try to ban Walmart’s coffin sales. Undertakers have an amazing amount of influence and have gotten a lot of laws passed to protect themselves. For example you have to buy a coffin for anyone you are cremating. Also, now Death Certificates are no longer issued by doctors but only by undertakers.

Because of some religious traditions, embalming may not be required, as long as the body is cremated, or interred within 48 hrs, in most cases, but there are exceptions. That is true for in Michigan.

I wonder about sixty pound large adults.
One does not have to pay exhorbatant prices for a casket.
For example, when mother died, there was not a casket in Tampa that qualified as a suitable casket for a Jewish burial. Such caskets are all wood - no nails or metal.
So - I went to Home Depot and purchased sufficient 1x12” plain pine boards, some dowels, and a dowel jig. Add a drill and some bits, and I successfully made her casket that night.
Mother was buried as she wished.
