Doug Hoffman's insurgent campaign in New York's special House race, which had already split national Republican leaders, is now turning into a litmus test for other Republican congressional candidates running in 2010 to prove their conservative credentials.
Liz Lauber, running in the Republican primary for a House seat in Missouri, this week made support for Mr. Hoffman a campaign issue, calling on five-term Republican incumbent Rep. Todd Akin to endorse and donate money to the Conservative Party nominee who is running in a special election Nov. 3.
Mr. Akin did endorse Mr. Hoffman, though his office said it was not a response to Mrs. Lauber's challenge but rather to calls received from constituents asking where the congressman stood on the race.
"The New York special election is becoming a referendum for the heart and soul of the Republican Party across the country," said Mrs. Lauber, a former congressional staffer. "I stepped up to the plate and threw my support [behind Mr. Hoffman] because I'm listening here to what people are saying at home."

In a sign of Mr. Hoffman's growing support, Democrats appear to feel more threatened by him than Mrs. Scozzafava.
In a new TV ad, a group called Accountable America attempts to link Mr. Hoffman to the Wall Street financial crisis. The liberal group MoveOn.org e-mailed its supporters Wednesday asking for money to defeat Mr. Hoffman, who it said represents "tea-baggers and hate groups."

Rush says we need to re-take the GOP rather than going third party. I’m wondering if we wouldn’t be better off in the Conservative Party to once and for all dump the “Republican” name and the baggage that comes with it.

By all accounts, we haven’t made much of an impression on the Party Elite Establishment (many of whom appear to tacitly agree with Ms. Pelosi’s sentiments re ‘tea partiers’) - but we’re making the lower echelons nervous, and that’s a trememdous accomplishment.....

I think we should take the NY model and nationalize it-should have done that long ago actually. Let’s have a national Conservative Party that can either endorse the Repub candidate or run someone as a Conservative Party candidate.
To me, this would be the best of both worlds as we would have a third party but use it to keep the Republicans in line.
Starting with McPsycho and Romney
I think there is a large infrastructure in the various States that has been developed over the years in response to local election legislation law. It would be a mistake to go third party instead of taking over the GOP apparatus.
GOP establishment = Whig = Know-Nothing
It is when the local conventions are held that you go, get on the Nominating and Rules committees and take over.
I tend to agree with the caveat that just because the GOP endorses a candidate doesn't mean I'm going to support him/her.
All of these folks who talk about bolting and creating need to try to get involved in their local GOP machine (county parties) and so on to try to build conservative support within the machine. If, after they get at least a sizable minority actively working with the party apparatus to try to mold it in their direction, they are still rebuffed, then I can buy it. Secure precinct chairmanships, county chairs, and work to take over the state parties. Make an effort to change the GOP from the inside. Calling Rush or posting on FR isn't working to change the party. Money, in of itself, isn't working to change the GOP from the inside. Getting involved in the apparatus is.
I also recognize that there is some diversity of opinion that is necessary. For example, while I wouldn't want to see Tammy Bruce (conservative talk show host...but is pro-choice and is a lesbian) in the Senate or run for President, perhaps she would be the only one who would be able to defeat a Henry Waxman in the CA-30 district -- and such a thing would be a huge improvement. But I wouldn't support her running against a more conservative candidate in CA-48 (Orange Co) or CA-49 (San Diego, Orange, Riverside Cos)...because we could get the more conservative pro-life candidates in office there. In other words, support the most conservative electable candidate in a given district for the GOP label. They might not all be as conservative as we, as FReepers, would like...but hopefully they would be better than the (D) alternatives.
Dede doesn't meet that criterion.
The RATs (along with Obama) are destroying this country and they must be stopped.
We need to unify to destroy them before they destroy all of us.
The Republicans in congress now are pretty darned good and we need to send them reinforcements, not more RATs.
This is why we have a primary process. Fight it out there and then unify to stop RATS.

Rush was twisting himself into knots on this story, trying to be for Hoffman and against 3rd parties at the same time. It was funny to listen to him. Bear with me, he says, the explanation is nuanced. LOL. I’ll say it is.
