Rush says we need to re-take the GOP rather than going third party. I’m wondering if we wouldn’t be better off in the Conservative Party to once and for all dump the “Republican” name and the baggage that comes with it.

I think we should take the NY model and nationalize it-should have done that long ago actually. Let’s have a national Conservative Party that can either endorse the Repub candidate or run someone as a Conservative Party candidate.

To me, this would be the best of both worlds as we would have a third party but use it to keep the Republicans in line.

I think there is a large infrastructure in the various States that has been developed over the years in response to local election legislation law. It would be a mistake to go third party instead of taking over the GOP apparatus.

Rush says we need to re-take the GOP rather than going third party.

I tend to agree with the caveat that just because the GOP endorses a candidate doesn't mean I'm going to support him/her.

All of these folks who talk about bolting and creating need to try to get involved in their local GOP machine (county parties) and so on to try to build conservative support within the machine. If, after they get at least a sizable minority actively working with the party apparatus to try to mold it in their direction, they are still rebuffed, then I can buy it. Secure precinct chairmanships, county chairs, and work to take over the state parties. Make an effort to change the GOP from the inside. Calling Rush or posting on FR isn't working to change the party. Money, in of itself, isn't working to change the GOP from the inside. Getting involved in the apparatus is.

I also recognize that there is some diversity of opinion that is necessary. For example, while I wouldn't want to see Tammy Bruce (conservative talk show host...but is pro-choice and is a lesbian) in the Senate or run for President, perhaps she would be the only one who would be able to defeat a Henry Waxman in the CA-30 district -- and such a thing would be a huge improvement. But I wouldn't support her running against a more conservative candidate in CA-48 (Orange Co) or CA-49 (San Diego, Orange, Riverside Cos)...because we could get the more conservative pro-life candidates in office there. In other words, support the most conservative electable candidate in a given district for the GOP label. They might not all be as conservative as we, as FReepers, would like...but hopefully they would be better than the (D) alternatives.

Dede doesn't meet that criterion.

Rush was twisting himself into knots on this story, trying to be for Hoffman and against 3rd parties at the same time. It was funny to listen to him. Bear with me, he says, the explanation is nuanced. LOL. I’ll say it is.

I agree. I think the GOP and Republican brands have been demonized by the Demrat left to the extent they are no longer viable labels. In any case, I don’t think either of those labels really enunciate what conservatives are about.

I would prefer something along the lines of Constitution Party. That document, and its relevance to America today, is really what the political fight is about right now.

Of course, if conservatives were able to take back the GOP they could change the label—and the mascot. Anybody have any ideas for a Conservative Party mascot? I’m thinking the bald eagle would do nicely. One reason is obvious. It has been our national symbol for a long time. Another is that it, too, is rising from near extinction.

“I’m wondering if we wouldn’t be better off in the Conservative Party to once and for all dump the “Republican” name and the baggage that comes with it.”

Don’t think so. Reagan built the conservative party, parked it in the GOP and we slept while the Rockefeller socialists moved in and took it. By taking back the GOP we’d be recovering stolen property. It’s a noble effort and all schemes, plots and tricks should be used to take it back. If the fascists and communists can take over the rat party, conservatives can do the same in the GOP. We’re moving on various fronts and have the b*stards surrounded.

Seeing as how you’re a deacon and are more familiar with the Almighty’s ways than me, I’d request that you send up a few prayers and ask for heavenly guidance.

MN GOP tried dumping the Republican name in the 1970s; but somehow the Democrats wouldn’t let them drop the hated name.

1) Whigs died out, why not Republicans?
2) We would need to let EVERYONE know, including ... nay ... ESPECIALLY the braindeads that keep sending the RNC money.
