China has told the United States it is launching a trade investigation that could lead to new import duties on autos and sports utility vehicles made by Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, a U.S. industry official said on Wednesday.
The action comes as U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack are in China for high-level talks aimed at resolving trade irritants between the two countries.
President Barack Obama, who will visit China in mid-November, angered Beijing last month by slapping a 35-percent duty on imports of Chinese-made tires which totaled about $1.8 billion last year.

Ping!
Can we just go ahead an enact a 25% across-the-board tariff and call it good?
To get costs down, we need to streamline the environmental protection laws, control unions and protect our manufactures more from frivolous lawsuits and crazy taxation.
OPINION:
Sounds right to me.
Works for me. And write it on a big piece of toxic Chinese drywall.
199%.
The best defense, is a good offense.
(oops, should turn on more lights in the morning...)
Meant to say 100%!! As in, a 100% import tariff on everything from China.
ALL OF IT.
Really we need to stop pussy-footing around about the loss of American jobs.
Now!
I thought the US Big 3 were Toyota, Honda and Nissan...they were the ones who got the "Clunker Stimulus"...
We have been in a trade war for years ... China won. They are the world’s biggest creditor, we are one of the world’s biggest debtors. At what point will people begin to understand that running a $600B trade deficit a year by borrowing money to pay for it is not a good idea?
199% works, too. Go big or go home.
The Chinese have been practically begging for this going on 3 decades. Time to put down the bottle rockets, and grab the RPG’s.
I think reciprocity might not be such a bad thing. The Chinese impose tariffs on American imports. If we enacted the same tariffs on Chinese goods, it might lead the Chinese to reconsider their stance. The French once had one office in the port of Marseilles through which all Japanese VCR’s had to be individually inspected by a single individual before being allowed into France. For better or worse, this is why France still has a consumer electronics industry. The principal selling point of this stance is that those who disagree could be reminded that the US is merely engaging in reciprocity.
NO cheers, unfortunately.
