How Can Glenn Beck Be Right on So Much and Yet Still Believe the book of Mormon? (serious question)

Posted on 10/26/2009 7:51:02 AM PDT by Scythian

I'm a huge Beck fan, in fact I'm listening right now here

http://www.ksfa860.com/common/gap_streamer.php

but something really confuses me. It takes the ability to use real critical thinking to know what Beck (and most of us know about the state of the country and where we are heading). That is, we have the ability to discover the truth no matter how much the media or conventional wisdom try to hide it. Yet on Mormonism, Beck is cleary wrong. Any Christian knows that the book or momonism is severely flawed and that Joseph Smith was no prophet. How can Beck cut through all the chaff of what is going on in our world and come to the truth and yet believe the writings of Joseph Smith? It doesn't make sense? I'm not saying he's up to something secret, not by any means, it's just that he's so right about so many things and completely wrong on the most important thing. Now, he just said on the air that he believes Jesus is the Savior of the world and that he is Mormon.

I also think that because he is Mormon he is not attacked near as much if he was a Evangelical Bible only believer. Anyway, am I nutz or does Beck being a Mormon seem bizarre?

My apologies for not pinging you on my poste to CrippleCreek. I should have been more considerate.

You know, I'd accept your apology -- except that you just did the very thing in this post that you're apologizing for! (Only this time with "the original vanity" poster -- Scythian!). You just said -- minus pinging him: The original vanity post that started this thread suggested Glenn Beck must be crazy because he is Mormon. He insulted the religion and all Mormons.

Again. Are we to accept what you say or how you repetitively act?

I stand by my initial assertion, "Who are you/we (any of us) to judge?"

What irony! Here you in just a handful of posts you "judged" me as being
hateful a couple of times --
demonizing a couple of times It just feels so
hypocritical or "highly hypocritical" (278)
"very angry"
"rude"
implying that I'm "disingenuinous, superficial, hypocritical and dirty" (#291)

...And yet somehow, twice now, you've claimed to be a person beyond judging??? Again. Are we to accept what you say -- "who of us are to judge?" or how you repetitively act -- repeatedly judging Scythian and myself in post after post?

Since you stand by your original post -- let's take another look at it? You judged Scythian as being one less worthy even to raise his questions in a vanity by skewering him with: Who are you to suggest that one faith is more right than another? I am Christian (Catholic). I don't pass judgment on anyone's faith...

I mean is that your FReeper ID? Are you the ThreadMaster who goes around asking every vanity poster with questions like, "Well, who are YOU to even suggest..."??? I mean even in that post to Scythian you claimed NOT to "pass judgment on anyone's faith" in the next sentence after questioning Scythian's faith-based Q to even "suggest that one faith is more right than another."

So not only do you seem to uphold all faiths as equally true, but you've dug into anyone who would even question this creed of yours -- whether it was Scythian or myself.

Finally, I ask you: Why have you insisted upon hijacking this thread to make it about Scythian as poster or about me or about you vs. Glenn Beck?

There isn’t a hair’s-breadth difference between Colofornian’s posts and those of somebody sent here deliberately by the opposition to create the impression that FR is anti-Mormon.

(You & Tenacious should lead a FReeper workshop on how to gossip about other posters without pinging them)

The entire context for us discussing this was Beck's beliefs

Mine has always been "how do his beliefs impugn his news commentary". Nothing less, nothing more.

I have asked that from the very start.

Tossing the word ‘hate’ around is a nasty liberal tactic, and was employed by Romneybots during the primaries, as if Romney’s being a Mormon was why he was rejected by conservatives. You don’t know Colofornian and have little experience to call upon for your specious characterization. But don’t let that stop you from continuing to bump this obviously agenda-laden thread.

But tell me, why does Glenn Beck & all true-believing Mormons (TBMs) get off the hook from so many FReepers re: these following beliefs?

All TBMs believe in Joseph Smith's original vision. It's the foundation of their faith. It's been enshrined as Mormon "scripture." Yet what do verses 18-20 of this founding vision claim? It claims every other non-Mormon sect has 100% abominable creeds. ("Abomination" means putrid) It claims every other non-Mormon sect has 100% corrupt professing believers. It claims every other non-Mormon sect is "wrong." And later Lds statements from the top down, say Christianity totally became apostates between 100 A.D. and 400 A.D.

Maybe they "get off the hook" partly because they don't believe what you claim they believe.

(You basically say mormons are wrong, they basically say you're wrong. So we should call mormons on intolerance?)

The actual text (of Joseph Smith History 1:18-20) to which you are referring says the "creeds" were an abomination in God's sight--not the believers or the churches themselves. (And if the mormons were right that God is corporeal, might not a corporeal God take a dim view of the then-current creeds?)

The actual text also says that "those professors were all corrupt; that: 'they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.'"

You equate "professors" to all believers--mormons do not do so, which you may not have known (but will now).

The footnote in the text on "professors" refers to Jude 1:4 and to a topical reference to "false prophets." As I understand it, "professors" here, as understood by mormons, refers not to believers "professing" a belief, but to learned or credentialed religious leaders claiming, without authority, to represent God.

The text also says about the "professors" that they "'draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.'"

This doesn't sound like the "100% abominable" and "100% corrupt" that you call mormon's view of others--after all, at least a form of "godliness" is present even in what the "corrupt professors" teach.

The text does say all of the sects were wrong, and that he was "to join none of them." But does this justify saying that mormons believe that all (other) Christian believers are "corrupt" and "an abomination to their God" as you say?

I don't see it.

I especially don't see it, having seen what the Book of Mormon has to say about the same issue: the state of churches and of people generally during the "apostasy" as mormons call it, the time from the death of the last apostles to the time of Joseph Smith:

". . . they have all gone astray save it be a few, who are the humble followers of Christ; nevertheless, they are led, that in many instances they do err because they are taught by the precepts of men." (2 Nephi 28:14)

In other words, even without an authorized church, even before Joseph Smith and the "mormons" came along, there were some who were "humble followers of Christ" who were not really "astray" but did "err" because of incorrect teachings. This is what mormons believe.

It appears that you are just trying to stir the pot by putting words in the mouths of those you oppose.

What is the end that justifies this means?

I will say it again. You truly desire for all here to agree with you and your opinion of LDS.

You know, state "Captain Obvious" statements all you want. I don't think anybody posts because they "inwardly desire" for folks to radically disagree with them!

I will not pass judgment on another’s faith in God or the religion they associate themselves with. I will pass judgment on your approach and behavior, not on your faith or your beliefs.

Well, if you weren't attempting to hijack this thread away from Beck and onto the posters with personal attacks, I'd actually agree with some degree of passing judgment on approach and behavior. (The apostle Paul stated that to the Corinthian Christians). I actually listened to your critiques of me on "tone" issues and invite you to continue to critique me on that. I think we should learn from what others have to say -- even if it's not fully on track.

What I found disengenious, though, in your posts were: (1) here you claimed to be beyond judging faith/beliefs and then you proceeded to judge behavior springing from faith/beliefs; (2) you're very tolerant about others' faith/beliefs yet didn't exhibit that same tolerance toward Scythian's (or mine) faith-based beliefs about Mormonism the belief system.

In line with 1 Cor. 2:15-16 I encourage Christians to judge "all things" (but not the inward heart or motivations) as the apostle Paul expressed: The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment: "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ." (1 Cor. 2:15-16)

Well, if you weren't attempting to hijack this thread...

Hijack the thread? Go and count your posts. Please go and review the points you made and how many of the posts denigrated LDS.

Don't forget, the original post was about Glenn Becks credibility with regards to his show.

Now, who hijacked the thread?

The Christian religion was founded by Peter and became known as the Holy Roman Catholic Church. All other Christian denominations came to be as a result of differences over the basic teachings or practices of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. So, unless you are a Catholic, applying the standard you have created, at the time of the inception of your religious denomination, its basis was deeply flawed since it in one way or another contradicted the teaching or practices of the Holy Roman Catholic Church.

So, the question becomes whether your beliefs are deeply flawed or whether the standard you have created by default is flawed. Does differing from the basic teachings or practices of the Holy Roman Catholic Church make a denomination and the basis for its teachings and practices deeply flawed?

I think if you read this entire thread...you'd have to agree if you want to be accurate, that many should actually be changed to a few.

So you think Beck is personally responsible for all content?

Please.

Do you think animated characters are just folks wearing costumes?

The illusion of show production is not lost on you, true believer.
