How Can Glenn Beck Be Right on So Much and Yet Still Believe the book of Mormon? (serious question)
Posted on 10/26/2009 7:51:02 AM PDT by Scythian
I'm a huge Beck fan, in fact I'm listening right now here
http://www.ksfa860.com/common/gap_streamer.php
but something really confuses me. It takes the ability to use real critical thinking to know what Beck (and most of us know about the state of the country and where we are heading). That is, we have the ability to discover the truth no matter how much the media or conventional wisdom try to hide it. Yet on Mormonism, Beck is cleary wrong. Any Christian knows that the book or momonism is severely flawed and that Joseph Smith was no prophet. How can Beck cut through all the chaff of what is going on in our world and come to the truth and yet believe the writings of Joseph Smith? It doesn't make sense? I'm not saying he's up to something secret, not by any means, it's just that he's so right about so many things and completely wrong on the most important thing. Now, he just said on the air that he believes Jesus is the Savior of the world and that he is Mormon.
I also think that because he is Mormon he is not attacked near as much if he was a Evangelical Bible only believer. Anyway, am I nutz or does Beck being a Mormon seem bizarre?

The Mormon thing does call into question his ability to rationally think. So you believe, and you're certainly welcome to your opinion. When Beck begins to throw out ideas because his religion tells him to, then I will worry about it.
Until then, his religion should have nothing to do with anything.
Besides, who are WE to say what he believes is NOT the truth? Seems a bit ignorant to think otherwise, IMHO.

Think of it this way:
You are in court. A man who happens to be Mormon is a witness on your behalf to some central fact in your case.
Opposing counsel asks how anyone who believes in the Book of Mormon can be taken seriously as a witness.
Do you object?
There’s your answer.

What difference does it make? If he believed in the Tora, does that make him wrong also? How about the King James version of the Bible, or the Catholic Bible. It’s what’s in a persons mind and heart that counts, not what we believe.

It’s such a character flaw to publicly proclaim one’s “accuracy” with respect to the afterlife. Annoying, arrogant, and primitive...

When Beck's Mormon views start to cloud his political acumen (as BO's Black Liberation Theology clouds his), then I'll start caring about this.
This ad hominem doesn't change the facts that Beck communicates, day by day.

If the religion he chooses helps make him a better person then the choice is a good one and it is no body’s business but his.

My position is that Beck simply doesnt know what is in the Book of Mormon. The only thing he knows about it is what he has been told... with the exception of reading from it in very small bits and pieces which fails to put it into its full context.
My position is that you have no idea what is in the Book of Mormon. Beck does. I do. You ought to read it, cover to cover, and ponder it. There is more in there about Jesus Christ and about this "promised land" which has to be the United States of America, than you apparently have been led to believe. And those strong (and true) doctrines are the substance of what motivates Beck.
By the way, if you are prone to think I am some half educated, deceived, fool, you might want to think again. My degrees include physics, aerospace, law (from Harvard) and a PhD. And I have been a fighter pilot for the USAF. My commitment to country runs deep, all the way back to the Revolutionary War. And my commitment to Jesus Christ and the gospel of Jesus Christ as expounded in both the Bible and Book of Mormon is equally deep.
Jesus does live. He is the Beloved son of the living God. And there are important ancient promises and warnings made by God to the inhabitants of this land we call America. Those promises and warnings are now more relevant than ever. As I indicated above, those insights motivate Beck and they motivate me.
Believe what you will and who you will. I do recommend, however, careful and prayerful study, analysis and searching when it comes to the Book of Mormon. If you sincerely ask, it will probably surprise you how God will answer.
But until you come to grips with what the Lord says about this promised land in the Book of Mormon, you won't see the big picture that Beck sees.

By the way, are you Protestant? Catholic? Eastern or Roman? Dispensationalist? Pre-trib? Post-trib? Young earth creationist? Old earth creationist? Calvinist? Arminian?
Atheist? Hindu? Buddhist? Bahai? Unitarian? Zoroastrian?
No matter what you believe, you believe something that someone else believes is idiocy.
So, there you are.

Scythian claims to be listening to Glenn today. Today Glenn cited the growing campaign—being led from Dallas media, apparantly—to divide the opposition to obammy and his marxist work to destroy the Republic. You want to have a religious skirmish rather than focus upon the bastard in your White House workign to destroy the Republic? Take the bait and watch the results.

re Beck, O'Rielly, atheists...There's no need to be concerned about any of those things. What unites conservatives is not Christianity or any specific flavor of it. Instead, it is just the basic belief in limited consensual government.
People the world over are looking for a wedge to drive in the middle of the conservative movement. Religious factionalism is the most likely tool. Why be suckered into playing their game.

Without reading every reply, Beck bluntly said he became a Mormon so he could have sex with the "hot chick" who became his wife. She wouldn't sleep with him unless they were married and she wouldn't marry him unless he converted. I don't think he belonged to any religion at that point, and he probably realized he needed to get straightened out. From his perspective he no doubt thought he was killing 2 birds with 1 stone.
I have no idea what his view are on the BOM. He may think "I don't know if this is actual, historical truth or not, but I like everything I see in the church, etc."
If you read the BOM and go by that alone, you will find little that differs from Christianity. I'll bet most, if not all, what you find objectionable in the LDS religion can not be found in the BOM. In fact, it may be contradicted by the BOM.
I've often accused LDS missionairies of playing a "bait-and-switch" game, because they push the BOM to get you into the LDS church. Often, it's not until long after you've been baptized into the LDS Church, that you learn about more "advanced" teachings of theirs. They would say it is "milk before meat".
Anyway, you don't know exactly how Beck felt about the LDS Church when he married his wife or what he actually believes now since he doesn't really talk about it in public.
I'm sure if you exposed all of your beliefs to us, some could find fault in them.

You do not have the right to mock Beck's religion or his devotion to that religion. That's his business and none of your.
May I point out that without the Light of Faith The Holy Bible, both NT and OT look like a bunch of pretty ridiculous fairy tales?

By and large, Mormons are an honest, clean, decent, industrious and patriotic lot.
WELL SAID !! All the Mormons I know are wonderful and honest people. Enough said !

The Founding Fathers had a wide and eclectic set of religious (or not) views. They agreed that allowing for those differences was of prime importance (First Amendment) and focused on the business of humans in their politics.
Glenn Beck is not trying to convert anyone afaik - he is focused on exposing corruption and preventing the collapse of the Republic. You should too.

Good point. I bet Glenn knows more about religion than most Freepers, and just came to very different conclusions.
I bet Flap Jackson in the Morning this Morning is a bitter agnostic.
