Animal slaughter for the World Cup?

South African traditional leaders plan to perform ritual animal slaughters to bless stadiums for the 2010 World Cup tournament ahead of the start of the showcase event next June, they said on Friday.

Zolani Mkiva, chairman of the Makhonya Royal Trust, a grouping responsible for co-ordinating cultural activities, said the tournament, the first to be held in Africa, needed to be blessed in true "African style."

"We must have a cultural ceremony of some sort, where we are going to slaughter a beast (cow)," said Mkiva.

South Africa is set to host the World Cup -- the world's most watched sports spectacle -- in less than eight months, with the tournament expected to attract about 500,000 foreign tourists

This should be cute.

The world's "sensitivity" police blanches at the thought of bullfighting, but ritual killing of a beast by a "more equal" ethnic group is perfectly acceptable.

The inconsistencies and fuzzy thinking ethically, morally and legally, boggle the mind...

It is one thing to perform barbaric primitive rituals, that have been traditional for thousands of years, in the privacy of your own group.
It is quite another to insist on forcing the spectacle on the civilized world.
Can we assume that PETA will be there for an en masse protest?

PETA may offer expertise on killing animals.

They have killed tens of thousands of dogs recently.

"We must have a cultural ceremony of some sort, where we are going to slaughter a beast (cow)," said Mkiva.

What does this mean? We are bound and determined to kill something and will invent a reason to kill the poor beast?

Cultures aren’t equal, and theirs is in most respects pretty sub-standard, but this particular bit is perfectly reasonable as a cultural expression.

The highly cultured Romans and Greeks did exactly the same thing as a sacrifice to the gods. In Spain, Portugal and parts of Italy, at the height of their cultural standing in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, much the same was done - bullfighting, itself derived from both the sacrifice rituals and the games of classical civilization, was a part of the usual revelry on great public occasions.

Its not our culture, its theirs, but there is nothing primitive about this part. On the contrary, the fact that so many of us are squeamish about these things is a symptom of our decline and decadence.

During all of 2008, PETA found adoptive homes for just seven pets. Just seven animals -- out of the 2,216 it took in.

Pathetic! It's a shame there isn't a way to inform every single person who donates to PETA of this.

I’m not a peta people and a good BBQ would be just fine with me. Slow roasted beast, potato salad, beans, maybe some coleslaw and Shiner Bock.
