Cultures aren’t equal, and theirs is in most respects pretty sub-standard, but this particular bit is perfectly reasonable as a cultural expression.

The highly cultured Romans and Greeks did exactly the same thing as a sacrifice to the gods. In Spain, Portugal and parts of Italy, at the height of their cultural standing in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, much the same was done - bullfighting, itself derived from both the sacrifice rituals and the games of classical civilization, was a part of the usual revelry on great public occasions.

Its not our culture, its theirs, but there is nothing primitive about this part. On the contrary, the fact that so many of us are squeamish about these things is a symptom of our decline and decadence.
