It's true. They never used to use this technology, though it has been available- but now that the government is running GM, apparently they have decided to go ahead with it..Did we miss that press release? At the very least, it should concern you..with this kind of technology in the wrong hands..

A nuke going off is unfortunate, but it is a localized event. Yeah it would send shock and awe like 9/11 did. I don’t wish that on anyone either. But we pulled through it.

But selling out our Constitution and national sovereignty to a world dictatorship. or bankrupting our nation is a national event that effects everyone for generations.
Israel can stand it’s ground or they would have been taken by now.
The important issue is a rogue government’s ability to spy on and intimidate people and intruding without legal cause.
The law is clear. When the government fears the people, we have freedom. When the people fear the government, we have tyranny.

Glenn Beck now has an armed guard with him, at least when he is in public events. I think Beck is concerned that Obama has put him on the Enemies List, and something untoward could happen to Beck or his family.

It isn’t that far-fetched, considering the rhetoric coming from the Obama White House, and their “Chicago Mafia” that is running the Executive Branch.

The government knows your license plate.

They know the make and model of your vehicle.

They know if it’s a GM car.

They can find out if it has OnStar.

If it has OnStar a law enforcement agency can request/order OnStar to comply with their wishes to diable your car because you’re wanted, etc etc.

People who have had their cars stolen have used their OnStar to find them and guide police to them. OnStar also calls 911 emergency services when you crash. It’s not a big leap for law enforcement to ask OnStar to disable a car for them.

I have been using maps for over 55 years, and I don’t need ONSTAR tracking me. It is a violation of the 4th Amendment.

The OnStar telematics controller is wired into the CAN bus on the vehicle. That provides a means of monitoring engine performance parameters, but also controlling the lights, horn, door locks and disrupting processing to cause an engine failure if they are so inclined. The onboard GPS allows tracking of the vehicle via the cell connection and an in-band modem to transmit the data over the voice path. Data transmission is capable in both directions, thus allowing them to perform desirable and undesirable things to your vehicle. It cuts both ways.

I have a cell phone, I have a GPS unit - why would I want On-Star?

My two cars are a Ford and a Mercury. If I lock my keys/dog/cat/kid inside one of them, I just punch the combination on the door keypad and it will unlock the vehicle.

I'm actually surprised that other car companies haven't followed suit and put keypads on their cars. Whether in the summer sun or below freezing, drenched with rain or covered in ice the keypad hasn't failed. I guess Ford has worked the bugs out of the system by now, since they've had the keypad for many years.

It's nice to be able to open your car/trunk without having your keys or lock your car with arms full of groceries just by leaning into a couple of buttons.

Any older GM vehicle (around 2006 or older) with the analog-only On Star is not vulnerable (as well as, of course, having a useless On Star).

That generation of controller used analog cellular with an in-band 202 modem. When analog cellular was turned off, these units became useless boat anchors. There's a good Motorola GPS module inside if you want to scavenge parts.

I just know this is going to get the trolls all PO’ed, Onstar currently CAN be remotely controlled to disable the throttle, lock the doors and able to operate just about every function on your vehicle that is tied into the CPU.

If your vehicle has a ride management system then yes indeed it can deflate the tires. Most people are unaware that the military has been using a remote inflate/deflate system for years on the Hummers.

I have been a GM mechanic and I keep up to date on this Onstar issue and oh yes they or rather any agency with the inclination and credentials can indeed take control of your Onstar vehicle, no they cannot make it drive itself but shut it down yes. Best thing to do if you want to not be “under the scrutiny” is to not buy an Onstar equipped vehicle, if you have to have Onstar with its features then wire in a manual disconnect switch for the microphone,and then the unit power.

Myself I would love to have a long tape recording that has tons of “sensitive” talk on it, and the unit is attached by a strap to a wild burro out in the desert.

Two and a half years ago I was shopping for a replacement car. This GM salesman was going on and on about OnStar.

I asked if I could buy a car without OnStar. He said 'no'. I told him I would expect an additional $500 off the price of the car to have the OnStar removed because I considered it to be a NEGATIVE sales feature. When he said that wasn't possible, I said that it wasn't possible to buy a GM.

I bought a Hyundai Sonata and love it.

The OnStar controller is hooked up to accelerometers that can detect a crash and initiate a call for help...even if you are unconscious. Cell phones become missiles in a crash. That GPS barely mounted so you can see it will be somewhere else in the car after the crash. The OnStar unit will report your location...assuming it hasn't been damaged or lost battery power in the collision. The first generation units were encased for battle.

While I was still working, all of our companies products transitioned to all computer controls and that computer could couple to a cell phone module. You could then monitor the equipment real time remotely..or have it report faults etc. I used to tell our customers that they hired engineers to watch the machinery, but now our machinery watched the engineers to see if they were using it right.
That kept them following standard proceedures pretty much.
We also had a feature that we could shut the maching off remotely..like if they stopped making payments.

I designed custom hardware interfaces and specialized software to model 5 cars that only existed on paper to wring out all the behaviors of a new telematics unit. The code dealing with SCP/ACP and J1850 buses was routed to a "Netway" device that served to connect a standard RS232 serial to the vehicle field bus. I simulated the horn, lights, locks and other elements on the screen of a laptop running Windows. The code underneath was raw win32 for speed. Dealing with some of the PWM signaling for the air bag and door locks was a bit strange. The buttons on the mirror employed an analog ladder network to generate a unique voltage for each button pushed. It was necessary to sense a narrow range around the "expected" voltage due to variations in the manufacturing process.
