On the Right, an Upstate Upstart
National Review ^ | October 21, 2009 4:00 AM

The case for rallying around Dede Scozzafava, the liberal and nominal Republican seeking to represent New York’s conservative 23rd Congressional District, eludes us. Scozzafava was thrust imprudently into the nomination by upstate Republican grandees faced with a special election following Republican John McHugh’s leaving his seat to become secretary of the army. The Republicans once again have shot themselves in the right foot.

In spite of its having gone for Obama in 2008, the district’s history suggests that it is basically conservative; Ms. Scozzafava is basically not. Boy, is she not: Not only pro-choice and in favor of homosexual marriage — common if distasteful concessions to the secular liberals’ agenda — she also supports some of the most odious items on the Left’s wish-list, including the “card check” initiative that would put a big cudgel in the hands of Big Labor while effectively disenfranchising millions of American workers who may not desire to become Teamsters, SEIU members, or similar. She signed the Americans for Tax Reform pledge to oppose tax hikes but immediately declared that she was not bound by having done so. It is no surprise that she is supported by the public-employees unions, ACORN — and Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas Zúñiga. (Really.)

at least Rush mentioned NY-23, even in passing. Every little bit helps.

Yesterday I donated directly Doug Hoffman’s campaign, not so much because I like him (I live on the other side of the country) but because I wanted to send a clear and unequivocal message to the RNC.

Change direction because no one is following you. I think this race is pivotal not so much in terms of the democrats but in terms of the real battle that is taking place between RNC and the conservative base.

We either win this battle or go our own way. The battle lines have been drawn its time to engage the enemy or we will be right back in the same situation come next election.

Well said.

In ofering Ms. Scorzofava as their candidate, the GOP effectively said that Republican values are only minimally necessary and Conservative values strictly optional.

If the GOP is stuck on stupid with a policy of selecting left-of-center candidates to attract a wider base... I’d suggest they will do the exact opposite.

Scorzofava is not in my NYS district, but if she was I certainly would not be voting for her. I’d vote for a true conservative or not at all. There’s minimal value in a RINO, the country needs conservatives.

Looks more like Scorzofava is a lefty just using the GOP to gain a seat. The GOP should start tossing cold hard cash to the conservative candidate.

Beck had him on radio this morning (some areas delay his show until evening in some markets); and he is scheduled for an interview with Beck on FNC tomorrow. If you’re conservative; it is worth your time to see what he has to say.

She is in mine and I wouldn’t vote for her in a million years. It would be like voting for Hillary or worse. Gag.

The GOP is fighting hard for Scozzafava. They should have just ignored her. I can understand them not funding Hoffman, he is not running as a Republican, even though he has pledged to caucus with them if elected.

The bad thing here is that donations to the RNC and RCCC, donations given to support the Republican platform and Republican candidates, are being spent to campaign for Scozzafava.

From the desk of
cc2k:
I support Doug Hoffman for Congress (PayPal).

Please, spread the word about this important election on November 3, 2009 in New York’s 23rd congressional district.

To me, this 23rd district issue is what is wrong with the GOP. Or... my expectations of the GOP (and I am registered Republican) are far too right facing to relate to the party anymore.

I can’t reconcile the GOP’s thought process in supporting such a lefty. We need conservatives and there should be a a very clearly evident differentiation between party policies. Dem and Dem-lite (GOP) doesn’t mate to my values.

Thank you for stepping up to support Hoffman, I should do likewise.

Too bad the NRA endorsed this boob leftie Scozzafavabean. Hoffman is pro Second amendment.

I wonder what they got in return for that miserable endorsement???

Something smells...

“I can’t reconcile the GOP’s thought process in supporting such a lefty. “

There is NO “GOP thought process” as the GOP is no monolith ... there are some upstate NY local GOP chairs who did this, oblivious to what they were stepping into and/or complicit in a Dem-lite liberal choice that is wrong for the party.

The fact is simple - these pols chose poorly. Now the voters will have to correct their mistake. Hoffman is the only conservative in the race so any conservative has to pick him.
