Revised formula puts 1 in 6 Americans in poverty

Posted on 10/20/2009 10:57:20 AM PDT by AngelesCrestHighway

The level of poverty in America is even worse than first believed.

A revised formula for calculating medical costs and geographic variations show that approximately 47.4 million Americans last year lived in poverty, 7 million more than the government's official figure.

The disparity occurs because of differing formulas the Census Bureau and the National Academy of Science use for calculating the poverty rate. The NAS formula shows the poverty rate to be at 15.8 percent, or nearly 1 in 6 Americans, according to calculations released this week. That's higher than the 13.2 percent, or 39.8 million, figure made available recently under the original government formula.

How convenient for the socialist in the White House! I'm sure he's somewhere behind the "revised formula"...

So what they're telling us, is that Obama is 1/6th the way to his goal...

It’s all part of the “hopey/changey thing” plan to destroy the middle class. Get rid of the middle class and you get rid of America. “We are just days away from the transformation of America.”

“First we shall take eastern Europe, then the masses of Asia. Then we shall take that last bastion of capitalism, the United States. We won’t have to attack. It will fall like an over-ripe fruit into our hands.” V. Lenin
“When we go to hang the last capitalists, they will compete to sell us the rope.” V. Lenin

STARRING KARL MARX and BARACK OBAMA!
(Ohh, that was redundant!)

Don't laugh. Social disintegration and demographics obviously have consequences. LBJ began subsidizing improvident and antisocial behavior in the 1960's and we got more of it. Lay-abouts are now an important constituency.

US poverty is not poverty in the real world. Yes, there are some people living under bridges and missing meals, but a lot of the people in those statistics are in no danger of missing a meal or going without a roof over their head.

Because of a job loss, I technically am one of those living in poverty, but I have a reasonably new car, a decent apartment, plenty of food and even an HDTV.

These numbers are designed to prove a political point, not show how many people are in real danger. A better number would be the number of people without psychiatric issues who are unwillingly living without adequate food and shelter.

Considering the number of people who have lost their jobs since Obamao began his Zero Solution, the poverty ratio is growing faster than statisticians can adjust their formulas. It will be 1 in 2 by 2012. America can be destroyed much quicker than Obamao’s most optimistic hopes for change.

So what constitutes “poverty” in this statistic? I couldn’t find any definition/criteria/figures for “poverty” in that article.

Why would they leave out such an integral part of the story?
