Florida Authorities Search for Girl, 7, Who Vanished After School [Pic in URL]
Tuesday, October 20, 2009
Florida officials have expanded their search for a missing 7-year-old girl who vanished while walking home from school Monday afternoon.
Somer Thompson was last seen about 2:45 p.m. while walking home from Grove Park Elementary school in Grove Park, northern Florida. She was with her twin brother, 10-year-old sister and friends and reportedly ran ahead of them after getting into a fight. When her brother and sister returned home, they said she was not there.
When Somer did not return home, her mother and her mother's boyfriend searched up and down the block. Somer's mother reported her daughter missing two and half hours later to a police officer.

Hope this isn’t another one of those horrific child-abduction stories.

What is wrong with parents allowing their children to walk home by themselves in today’s climate!

Beseler said 57 sex offenders have been interviewed within a three-mile radius, and their homes and yards have been searched. The search was expanded Tuesday to a five-mile radius and officials report they will interview 30 more registered sex offenders. And that's just the number they *interviewed*, not how many live in the neighborhood. Public hangings would eliminate this.

I cringe when I see "the mother's boyfriend" mentioned in these stories. That got me, too, along with these gems:

...Her backpack is black with pink and white skulls and crossbones.
Where do these people live--the Barbary Coast?

Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said officers are investigating whether Thompsons disappearance is connected to an event that happened in the area on Oct. 10, when three people tried unsuccessfully to lure a 5-year-old girl into a car. That doesn't sound good at all. Prayers up.

I have to admit I do too, but my son just married a girl with 2 kids after dating her for a couple of years. He treats them as if they were his own, he is as good a Dad to them as you could find. I have a little different perspective on it now, but yes, it’s often not a good situation for the kids.

Of course, it was a different time when my kids were growing up, but I likely would have looked everywhere I could think of before I called the police.

Sadly, sex offender can be anything from a true predator (and yes, they should just be done away with, and certainly NEVER back on the streets) to a guy who had sex with his underage girlfriend when he was 18. It’s funny to me, we have a culture that encourages kids to have sex and then makes sex offenders of them for it.
I wonder if they only interviewed the predators? If so, that’s REALLY scary!
