SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, SC (WIS) - Two Air Force F-16 jets based out of Shaw Air Force Base collided off the coast of South Carolina Thursday night, and one of them is missing.

Air Force officials said the fighters were assigned to the 20th Fighter Wing collided in mid-air over the Atlantic Ocean about 8:30pm on Thursday near Myrtle Beach. The aircraft were participating in night training maneuvers, officials said.

The aircraft carried one person each. One F-16 was able to land safely at Charleston AFB, and the pilot is being examined by Air Force medical personnel.

The location of the other F-16 and its pilot is unknown at this time. A search is underway involving the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy and aircraft from Charleston AFB.

A board of officers will investigate the accident. As soon as additional details become available, they will be released.

No updates on the local TeeVee.

Likely they lost the A/C and the pilot - if the pilot ejected OK, the seat beacon would have been squalling its electronic ass off about 30 seconds after the seat left the A/C.

Prayers for the family, for sure.

Shaw F-16’s collide during night training maneuvers
Two F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft assigned to the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base collided in mid-air over the Atlantic Ocean about 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening about 40 miles east of Folly Beach, S.C.

The aircraft were participating in night training maneuvers. They carried one person each.

The first F-16 was piloted by Capt. Lee Bryant and was able to land safely at Charleston Air Force Base. Bryant was examined by Air Force medical personnel and is unharmed.

The location of the second F-16 Fighting Falcon and its pilot is unknown at this time. That pilot has been identified as Capt. Nicholas Giglio. Aircraft and surface vessels of the U.S. Coast Guard are combing the ocean east of Charleston, but Giglio and his aircraft are still missing at this time.

Both aircraft were participating in night training maneuvers over the Atlantic.

A board of officers will investigate the accident. As additional details become available, they will be released by the Item.
