Shaw F-16’s collide during night training maneuvers
Two F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft assigned to the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base collided in mid-air over the Atlantic Ocean about 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening about 40 miles east of Folly Beach, S.C.
The aircraft were participating in night training maneuvers. They carried one person each.
The first F-16 was piloted by Capt. Lee Bryant and was able to land safely at Charleston Air Force Base. Bryant was examined by Air Force medical personnel and is unharmed.
The location of the second F-16 Fighting Falcon and its pilot is unknown at this time. That pilot has been identified as Capt. Nicholas Giglio. Aircraft and surface vessels of the U.S. Coast Guard are combing the ocean east of Charleston, but Giglio and his aircraft are still missing at this time.
Both aircraft were participating in night training maneuvers over the Atlantic.
A board of officers will investigate the accident. As additional details become available, they will be released by the Item.
