Rescuers are tracking and chasing a "homemade flying saucer" that is in flight with a 6-year-old, by himself, on board.
The incident started this morning in Fort Collins when the boy got into the balloon-like device, which was built by an adult, and it came loose from a tether, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.
The contraption could rise as high as 10,000 feet, the sheriff's office said.
The home-made flying saucer was last seen in flight over Weld County.
The sheriff's office is working the Federal Aviation Administration to determine how to best get the boy down.

LOL! We will be at the Philly affiliate.
Same here. One other thing, I don’t know about anyone else, but, as a mother,I would have had an indepth talk with the brothers to find out everything I could from them, and I would have torn that place apart to see if he was ANYWHERE in that house.
A mother knows her children, or she should know them well enough to know when children that age are not telling the truth, or if they aren’t telling the whole story.
yes, but not at 6,000 feet altitude in Colorado, Just read the kid was found. I took a guess he might never have been in that balloon. Reading some stuff about this family, Im wondering if it was some sort of hoax.
All ends well, that is unless they get the big bill. lol...
The Heene family appeared on the ABC television show “Wife Swap.” A website for the show said when Heene family members aren’t together chasing storms, “they devote their time to scientific experiments that include looking for extraterrestrials and building a research-gathering flying saucer to send into the eye of the storm.”
My daughter was banned from playing hide and seek at the age of 4 because she hid so well it took us hours to find her and no amount of threats or coersion could force her out of hiding.
They said they found him in a box in the attic of the garage.
I am so happy that so many FReepers are able to appreciate all the great things that these kids are learning from their family. There is a lot of REAL science education going on here, a lot of self reliance, a lot of understanding of the excitement of life and appreciation of the natural world that God gave us to explore.
I’m also happy to see so many are able to appreciate that some children will get around even vigilant parent’s guards, and do things because they are adventurous, and intelligently curious.
It is my unswerving opinion that those who stifle this type of curiosity by overly tight oversight of their children do the world a great disservice.
My only hope is that the older brother was not in on the joke, and honestly thought his brother was up in the balloon. I don’t blame the 6yo for hiding as well as he could for as long as he could stand it!
I expressed that thought to my kids pretty early on. I hate to admit that maybe I’m a bit jaded.
Confidence in law enforcement has never been lower.
I would not want to be that kid after today.
I added one piece of information and You put words in my mouth that were never said. It seems that you need a course in reading comprehension. You don't listen very well.
you proceeded to attack everyone except yourself.
LOL! Great visual picture:)
Looks like you were right!!!!
How many times have a rescue like this been attempted? Never?? Nobody has ever trained for a situation like this so its going to be risky no matter what.

A new emergency scenario has just been born... LOL... we’ll have parachutists all over the country training for this now.
I wager that within six weeks, there will be a movie or TV show base on this!
I didn’t say you said them. You repeated that they were nutcases. So what. Can you imagine if law enforcement/rescue services approached this with that point of view:
Oh great, that “family” is reporting their child missing in a balloon. Remember “them,” the nutcases off of Wifeswap?
I keep praying that the little guy freaked out when the thing started coming loose and hid.

I was thinking skydivers could have gotten to this thing.
Why don’t we have rocket packs yet?
I hear the old man took months to build that very cool balloon, only to have the kid cut it loose....Get the belt!
