Limbaugh doesn't get it: Idiots damage NFL product
The Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | 10/14/2009 | Jeff Schultz

Posted on 10/14/2009 8:50:05 PM PDT by Oshkalaboomboom

Rush Limbaugh will not be an NFL owner and it’s not because, to borrow the title of Al Franken’s book, “Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot.”

OK. It’s a little bit of that.

If Limbaugh and all of his “ditto heads” out there want to blame the liberal, bed-wetting, panty-waste, fruitcake media with the left-wing agenda — and THAT’S why this country’s going to hell in a hand-basket, mister! — for him being rejected by the NFL, well, they’re missing the point.

The NFL has a product. The NFL has the most sought-after product in professional sports. The NFL is all about protecting its product. It’s about cultivating an image and protecting the league shield. Why? Because that leads to fans, which leads to ticket sales, which leads to sponsorships and wealth and, most of all, power.

It doesn’t really matter that all NFL owners and many players are rich and therefore, logic dictates, probably lean to the right politically themselves. This isn’t about politics. It never was about politics. When I slammed Limbaugh’s candidacy as a potential part-owner of the St. Louis Rams last Tuesday — and then a second time — it infuriated Limbaugh’s blind loyalists. Why? Because most of his fans apparently can’t see beyond their nearby radio speaker, out of which they can hear his turbo-lipped ramblings.

The NFL doesn’t want an owner who was investigated for illegally obtaining, and then becoming addicted to, prescription painkillers. And yes, there is a big difference between one of 32 owners — who is seeking approval from other owners — being a former drug abuser, and one of 2,000 players becoming a drug-abuser after he enters the league.

The NFL also doesn’t want someone who has proven to be divisive, both racially and otherwise. It doesn’t want someone who:

♦ Sang, “Barack, the Magic Negro,” on his show.

♦ Makes statements like, “The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback to do well,” which he claimed was why the media was going “soft” on Donovan McNabb (which must have seemed really funny to McNabb).

♦ Once said, “The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips.”

♦ Similarly referenced the NBA, saying, “Call it the TBA, the Thug Basketball Association. … They’re going to watch the Crips and the Bloods.”

♦ Said of the “Survivor” TV series that the, “African-American tribe” had the worst swimmers, and Hispanics “will do things other people won’t do.”

♦ Said, “[In] Obama’s America, the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering.”

♦ Said, “Minorities never do anything for which they have to apologize.”

Should I go on, or is that enough?

Dave Checketts understood. He heads the group seeking to purchase the Rams, and he knew the other owners never would approve of the sale. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell didn’t want him in the league. The NFL Players Association didn’t want him in the league — and there’s a new Collective Bargaining Agreement to be negotiated.

Limbaugh is out. He knows why. He just can’t admit the truth.

His reaction: “This is not about the NFL, it’s not about the St. Louis Rams, it’s not about me. This is about the ongoing effort by the left in this country, wherever you find them, in the media, the Democrat Party, or wherever, to destroy conservatism, to prevent the mainstreaming of anyone who is prominent as a conservative. … Therefore, this is about the future of the United States of America and what kind of country we’re going to have.”

So the U.S. is going to hell because the NFL doesn’t want Rush Limbaugh as an owner?

Perfect. My kind of country. My kind of league.

You miss the obvious point concerning NFL hypocracy.

Vick is good to go of an NFL Sunday but Rush is persona non grata. Please explain this stuff & nonsense ...

When it’s all over we’ll be saying, “Rush was right”.

They don’t understand why Rush’s listeners tune it. He protects his brand by telling the truth and as factual as possible.

What a dope wrote that story.

The NFL has Al Sharpton as a commissioner.

So much for their image.

Michael Vick.

Image???

And the LA Times is running a story right now to the effect that some of the signals used by players look like gang signs. Presently under investigation.

But the NFL must keep its image.

As for the drugs, there is a big difference between getting hooked on a prescription a doctor gave you for a legitimate illness or injury and snorting coke.

If you can’t see the difference: Arguing with fools only makes one look foolish.

No, I didn't miss it. I just think that he's paid for his crime and is not a good example in this case. Rush is not being punished for some crime, he is being punished for being a conservative and anti obumber. By that standard, any owner that is liberal and anti Palin should not be allowed to own a team.

Exactly!

I think the people who are making asses of themselves by commenting on things they never heard come out of Rush's mouth are going to regret it too. As far as I'm concerned the NFL can KMA. If they aren't smart enough to SHUT UP and just play the game I am not interested in watching them.

I, for one, don't like the image they're "cultivating".

My husband and I were fans, but we're done with them. We won't be watching, or buying their products. I'm hoping the biggest majority of Rush's 20 million listeners think and do the same.

I figure Rush may keep on going to the games and watching them on television. If he has the stomach for it, that's his decision.

This has ruined my enjoyment of watching the games.

"...panty-waste..."

It's "panty-waist", you stupid liberal jerkoff.

For the record, I quit reading your sophomoric diatribe right there.

Sorry, but you miss the point yet again.

The NFL must ‘protect its brand’ from such as Rush even as they welcome dog torturers into the fold.

Yes Vick paid his time. But he is a far, far worse icon in the NFL than Rush might ever, ever be ....

You focus on legalisms. I refer to ethics & moral scruple.

Signals to Rush that he is better off well past the NFL.

Still, he should sue the beejezzus out each & all of his slanderers & libelers.

I wont be buying any NFL gear, but I can not stop watching my beloved Broncos. I've written a letter to both the Broncos and the NFL expressing my disgust. But I can't just stop watching, at least not until they loose one, maybe.

I'm sure he will. Now does that tell you something about RUSH? If it were politics I would then call him a RINO.

The richest congressional districts are now held by Democrats, moron.

Money doesn't mean common sense, although from reading this guy, it sounds like he has neither.

Sure, we all get it. Ex-star QB’s being murdered by their girlfriends that wives don’t know of? Aww, who cares? The Titans organize a special remembrance for him. Vick sadistically takes life, give him a second chance. Pac-Man Jones? Why, he’s just misunderstood. That is until he doesn’t produce on the field than he’s banned. Prima donna QB’s that make everyone’s life hell because they think it should be all me, me , me...or them them, them...but Farve plays the game like a kid. How can we not love him? Players being caught driving drunk or doing steroids, all quietly swept under the rug.

We get it. We get that thugs, criminals, substance abusers, pampered overpaid adulterous brats are all great for the NFLs image.

So long as they aren’t conservatives. That is where the line must be drawn. I’m just wondering when they’ll start designating which seats and water fountains we’re allowed to use.
