Bugs, baramins and beauty (biology professor explains why he is a young earth creationist)
Creation Magazine ^ | Dr. Carl Wieland

Posted on 10/12/2009 9:57:19 AM PDT by GodGunsGuts

Dr Gordon Wilson (pictured left) has a Master’s degree in Entomology, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Public Policy. He is currently a Senior Fellow of Natural Philosophy (a.k.a. biology professor) at New Saint Andrews College in Moscow, Idaho, USA--a classical liberal-arts college that he says takes an unashamedly biblical, young-earth creation position...

"Natural Philosophy (a.k.a. biology professor)"

You might as well say

Plumber a.k.a TV repairman.

Really?

Merriam-Webster defines “Natural Philosopy” as:
“natural science; especially : physical science”

So a more apt analogy would be something like

Electronics Technician (a.k.a. T.V. repairman)

A Freeper suggested the GOD OF WONDERS DVD. I ordered in from Netflix and was amazed at the production quality. It really argues the case that only a Creator can design just fantastic beauty. From bugs to lightning.

Most, if not all but the far lunatic fringe of Biology professors would strongly disagree.

Why not do some research about articles you link.
The guy is at a christian college that has this quote on it’s web site’s front page:
“This new degree of Bachelor of Science does not guarantee that the holder knows any science. It does guarantee that he does not know any Latin.” (from a 1900 speech by a dean at Harvard)

Here is a letter about the school this “scientist” is at:

Obviously Wilson is attempting to see where his beliefs about creation lead him in the natural world, much to his credit.
I suppose a person can speculate about some matters like the soulfulness of insects and their possible suffering or not before the fall but since the Bible is silent on that particular subject we must not forget that speculation is just that, speculation, and that by persons, us, whose reasoning and logic is also fallen, as Isa. 55:8,9 makes clear.

Whatever the shortcomings of the school it sounds more like a complaint about creationists by Grier than anything else.

“MOSCOW SCHOOL AMONG THE TOP 40 BIBLE COLLEGES
Click here for more on Wilson's Religious Empire
Moscow's New St. Andrews College (NSA) was recently listed among the top 50 conservative Christian schools by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. This institute is supported by the conservative National Review and the Heritage Foundation, and its evaluation of schools relies on faculty and student self reports.

And the school IS accredited. From it's web page:

“Accreditation
New Saint Andrews College is a member of the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools, having been awarded accredited status as a Category II institution by the TRACS Accreditation Commission on November, 29, 2005. The College was approved as a Category III institution, authorized to offer Associate’s, Bachelor's, and Master's degrees by the TRACS Accreditation Commission on April 17, 2007. Accreditation indicates that the College substantially meets the TRACS Institutional Eligibility Requirements (IERs), is in substantive compliance with the TRACS Standards and Criteria, has had a peer evaluation after completing a Self-Study, and in the professional judgment of both the on-site evaluation team and the Accreditation Commission provides quality instruction and student services”

Why not do some research about the things you link and the background of the complaints and complainers?

Are you implying by omission that he is a scientist at a non-bible college? Is this school accredited for anything other than bible studies?

Why is this news? It belongs in the religion or philosophy forums. If I started posting bios of well known scientists, in the religion forum, you’d be trying to get me banned in a millisecond.

BWAAAAAAAhahahahahahaha.....so now "natural philosophy" is "biology"???

This would seem a big problem for evolution to explain.

No, it wouldn't. One would have to consider CO-evolution....that the wasp and the antlion co-evolved at the same time from their respective ancestors.....not that the wasp suddenly evolved a behavior. This entire notion he's talking about is based in ignorance and slight of hand. But hey, what exactly does "natural philosophy" say about it?

He agreed that if insects are not what the Bible refers to as truly living creatures or nephesh chayyah (having the nephesh or ‘soul’—plants do not, so are not truly living in the biblical sense) then the problem goes away

GOOD....find a warped sense of reality to back up a warped sense of reality.

Oh my Gosh! One of those kooky little comic books changed a life!

“A small comic booklet by ICR’s Dr Duane Gish set [this Gordon Wilson guy] ‘on the right course’.”

And just look at him now! A real live Natural Philosopher at a bible college!

Since he can be swayed by a comic book, I’m surprised he doesn’t run around with a cape and tights.

Or maybe he does?

I hate to comment negatively on New St. Andrews because I'm sitting about three blocks from them at the moment and I know a couple of people there, so don't take this as negative. Nice folks. What they do, they do well. But they don't offer a science program at all. What they do offer:

Undergraduate Degrees
Undergraduate programs include an Associate (2-year program) and Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Culture (4-year program).

Graduate Degrees
The College’s graduate programs include a Master of Arts in Trinitarian Theology & Culture (M.A.) and Master of Studies and Graduate Certificate in Classical Christian Studies (M.St. & Grad.Cert.).

That's the stuff you'd go there for. Small school, heavy Christian emphasis. That small, you have to specialize.

It's an interesting place - funky hundred-year-old brick building in the middle of downtown Moscow, which is a strange little university town. They don't have a campus beyond that and their students have to compete for housing with the much larger University of Idaho - not much cross-pollination between the two student bodies or faculties of which I'm aware. I believe FReeper LS spoke there a couple of years ago on his own professional topic, which is history.
