41 dead as suicide blast hits northwest Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A massive suicide bomb hit northwest Pakistan killing 41 people Monday, as the military geared up for an assault on Taliban rebels blamed for increasingly bloody and brazen attacks.

The bomber flung himself at a paramilitary convoy passing through a busy market in Shangla, a northwest district near Swat valley where the army claimed to have flushed out Taliban rebels after an offensive launched in April.

But Islamist extremist groups appear far from quashed, with an audacious raid on army headquarters over the weekend leaving 22 people dead and underscoring the vulnerability of the nuclear-armed nation.

The Al-Qaeda-linked Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) movement, holed up in the lawless northwest tribal belt bordering Afghanistan, claimed responsibility for the day-long hostage drama near Islamabad, and vowed more attacks.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the Shangla blast, but the suicide bombing bore all the hallmarks of a TTP strike, and hit in a one-time stronghold of fugitive Swat Taliban commander Maulana Fazlullah.

What's the point of resisting the talibs - Obama wants to work with them!

Still, the carnage is just a glimpse into the dark heart of Islam.

Did Emperor Obama’s minions say there is a difference between the Taliban and Al Qaeda and that we may work to include the Taliban in Afghanistan’s future? How’s that for thinking outside the box! (Defeat in Afghanistan: Coming soon to a tv screen near you)

Just a point of clarification, these are Amish Taliban extremists involved here.

The number of dead has been rising steadily for three hours now. Hopefully no more.
Unless they're Taliban.

A place for the Taliban??? The Taliban are not Afghanis!! They are a religious sect!! The terrorists around the world will be ratcheting up their bombings because they know there is nobody to stop them. They smell the weakness of the US, wait til it happens here, cause it’s coming.

re: difference between the Taliban and Al Qaeda

I have had a question about that, and since you bring it up let me glom onto your post and ask for help and info.

I have not taken the time to learn the main differences, let alone the nuances, between the Taliban and the AQ movements. I tried once, but it was just too confusing.

Obama has let the drone attacks on terrorists in some areas not only continue, but apparently increase in both frequency and the value of targets.

Let me be frank, I am convinced Obama is Muslim at heart. Any claims to being a Christian are simply the lies that Muslims feel their holy book requires them to tell if it will further the Muslim cause. On the surface it would appear his approval of attacks on these terrorists would fly in the face of reason if he is indeed Muslim at heart. Sort of a cognitive dissonance thing, your heart tells you one thing but your eyes report something else.

But then it occurs to me that the Muslim faith is anything but one big happy family, all pursuing the same end. There is a lot, a whole lot, of friction between the various sects of the ROP. So much so that given the choice of killing and American or another Muslim who is felt to be an apostate they would kill the fellow Muslim. Is it possible that the attacks Obama is allowing to happen are on those of a sect that is different from the sect to whom his heart belongs?

They say not, but even casual observation tells me that there's no such thing as “just a Muslim.” The divisions among them are more deadly than those within the Christian faith. Could it be that Obama is using the power of his office to support his particular brand of Islam to the detriment of those who are beholden to another sect?

Or do I just need to replace the aluminum foil in my hat? It's been a couple of years and Lord knows it been under constant attack by conspiracies of all kinds. Maybe I need to send it in for refurbishing, or even consider a newer model.

re: *ANY* redeeming values in islam???

In a perverse way, yes. I admire their devotion to whatever form of Islam they embrace. Even if it were an accepted Christian principle I don't think I could offer up my child as a suicide bomber. I am so thankful that I worship and serve a loving God who does not need my pitiful efforts to work His will on Earth. If I see something I think is wrong I can go to Him in prayer, one-on-one, and if it needs changing He will see to it, on HIS timetable. That does not mean that I don't support wholeheartedly the mission of the USA to support and defend freedom around the world. But I don't think God intends for me to personally launch a one-man program of violence against someone or something I think is wrong. There's a big difference!
