“Fierce gunbattle after assault on army HQ in Rawalpindi”
Saturday, 10 Oct, 2009
SNIPPET: “ISLAMABAD: A team of gunmen brandishing assault rifles and grenades tried to break into Pakistan’s army headquarters on Saturday, sparking a raging gun battle with troops outside Islamabad, police said.
The brazen attack was the third major militant assault in a week and came as the government said it was planning an imminent offensive against militants in their strongholds in the rugged mountains along the border with Afghanistan.
The gunmen drove up to the army compound in Rawalpindi shortly before noon and tried to force their way inside before being stopped by soldiers, said Mohammed Jamil, a police official.
The attackers jumped out of the vehicle, took up positions throughout the area and began firing at the troops, he said.
One gunman hurled a grenade, and others fired sporadically at those manning the checkpoint at the compound’s entrance, said a senior military official inside.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity.
He said top army officials were trapped inside the compound.”
I hope they have enough to be safe. It sounds like a serious breach of information.

“Pakistan releases pro-Taliban official”
By BILL ROGGIO
October 9, 2009 4:25 PM
SNIPPET: “A Pakistani court has ordered the release of Syed Muhammad Javed, the pro-Taliban commissioner of the Malakand Division, the region that encompasses the Swat Valley. Javed openly aided the rise of the Taliban in Swat after being appointed commissioner in February. He openly facilitated the Taliban takeover of neighboring Buner, a move that forced the government to launch a military operation to drive the Taliban out of Swat and the surrounding regions.
Pakistani journalist Zahid Hussain summed up Javed’s role in aiding the Taliban in an article written in Dawn on May 31, 2009. Javed hosted a victory party for the Taliban in early April after the government capitulated and signed the Malakand Accord, which gave the Taliban control over a huge swath of northwestern Pakistan. The party was a virtual who’s who of Taliban leaders in the northwest.”
