Thank you for the explanation.
I find this disturbing, as if the moon has been violated.

I think we should implement a trillion dollar plan to send solar powered robotic bulldozers to the moon, they could re-surface the moon the so that from earth it would look like the “Death Star” from Star Wars, so when we look up at the moon we can all make the joke “That’s no moon!!! That’s a space station!”
It would actually be a better use of the money that the current rat holes we are throwing money into.

It was the end of the mission for the orbiting space craft, so they figured they'd end the mission on a 'bang' (crash the craft into the Moon) and see what other interesting things they can discover about the lunar surface.
Actually our 'bomb' is the empty Centaur upper stage, which was going to the Moon any way as it had the same velocity as the LRO satellite, which is now orbiting the Moon.NASA built a smaller 'shepherd' space craft to follow the empty stage down to the Lunar surface.

making the moon look like the Death star might actually scare off alien lifeforms.

I am wondering if the seismographs left on the Moon by the Apollo astronauts picked up anything. The Moon should be ringing like a bell after the strike because it does not have any water to dampen out the seismic vibrations.
