President Obama is prepared to accept some Taleban involvement in Afghanistans political future and is unlikely to favour a large influx of new US troops being demanded by his ground commander, a senior official said tonight.
Mr Obama appears to have been swayed in recent days by arguments from some advisers, led by Vice-President Joe Biden, that the Taleban do not pose a direct threat to the US and that there should be greater focus on tackling al-Qaeda inside Pakistan.

>Can we really impose a democracy on such a relatively primitive people?
Can you force a cactus to grow apples by pointing a gun and/or throwing money at it?
Many feel that they are risking their lives and that colleagues have died for a futile mission and an Afghan population that does nothing to help them.
“Making the World Safe for Democracy” is a Wilsonian concept, that had disastrous results in World War One.
George W. Bush’s “Making the Middle East Safe for Democracy” is by no means conservative . .
I agree that we need at least 60,000 more troops in Afghanistan. I differ with you in that I want those troops to be Afghanis, not Americans.
Shock and awe! Shocked by his incompetence, awed at his stupidity!
I figure protecting Americans from annihilation is as conservative as one can get.
And I don't like your use of limited information to badmouth our troops either. Jeff is right. These guys volunteer and have volunteered to go back, and to go from Iraq to Afghanistan.
They are certainly disheartened by the creepy ignoramus in the WH, but they are most certainly NOT universally depressed.
Say what you will, as I have stated, our troops there know the score and to date have re-up for the misison. It is an all volunteer force and that is something you cannnot escape.
The fact is also, we have not been hit again because these isamic jihadists have been too busy hiding in hole in the ground and fighting in their own backyards to effectively put large scale operations in place to come here, and that is definitely in the vital interests of the US.
I also know this, from talking directly to Afghans and Iraqis (both of whose populations have made more sacrifices in blood in this fight than you are willing to admit), and they all agree that they are MUCH better off than they were under either Saddam or the Taliban...which is obvious on its face. So your arguements, IMHO, fail across the board.
In fact, one of the only things that can reverse the good that has been done, and paid for in blood, would be for us to not finish the job. Under Obama, that is a distinct possiblity.
“Im sure he was only talking about moderate Talibans ”
Yeah, cause....we all know what “”moderates”” he has surrounded himself with throughout his life and during his 8 month reign of terror in the WH.
</sarcindeed>
So why have we asked our NATO allies to fight the Taliban all these years?
There has never been a more opportunistic bunch of socialists in charge of the U.S. government. I wish the country much good luck in surviving this crowd.
I never thought we would see a repeat of Vietnam, but just as Obama has not learned anything from Carter’s history he also hasn’t learned anything from LBJ, either... and what the hell is the matter with him taking direction from Biden instead of his generals??
The whole frickin point of going to Afghanistan was so that the Taliban would NOT have a say in Afghanistan’s future.
Just when Obama is on the verge of doing something right he manages to screw that up too.
“Can we really impose a democracy on such a relatively primitive people?”
No more nation building please.
LOL!
Ask a refugee from Vietnam who fled during the war just what he thinks of Joe Biden’s contribution to his country’s downfall. You might get some colorful language...
What a terrible mistake it will be......

Prayers for you & Sgt Roback. I am very sorry for your loss . Prayers for all our troops.
And now he shows favoritism to the Talaban.
I am truly sorry to hear of your friend.
I continue to be in awe of all of you who have stepped up to the task of taking the fight to the enemy abroad, so he won’t be on my street.
Keep the faith that the REAL AMERICA deeply appreciates what you have chosen to do and the sacrifices that have been made.
I am currently reading “God in the Foxhole”, a book testifying to the amazing courage and loyalty of our men in war for over 200 years.
Again, I am in awe.
Thank you, and your buddies.
It IS happening in Iraq. The militias are reconstituting and the Iraqi Security forces spit on our guys and gals. They insult them. And they shun them as much as they can. Our Troops are isolated away from the citizens these days, only called upon by Iraq when they need heavy firepower. The Commanders in Iraq are LIVID at the way US Forces are being treated, but you don’t hear it. The silence is deafening.
And yes. It is intentional.
