PHOENIX — An Arizona sheriff known for aggressively cracking down on illegal immigration has been stripped of some of his special power to enforce federal immigration law, and he claims the Obama administration is taking away his authority for political reasons.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, whose office faces racial profiling allegations over crime and immigration sweeps in some heavily Latino areas of metro Phoenix, said officials from Washington won't let him renew a deal that let his deputies make federal immigration arrests

The U.S. government, which does most of the nation's immigration enforcement, is changing its rules for allowing local police to enforce more expansive federal immigration laws. Nationally, more than 1,000 local police and jail officers have been granted the power since 2002 to make immigration requests and speed up deportations.

Arpaio has more officers with the special powers than any other local police agency in the country. For more than two years, 100 of his deputies have made immigration arrests and another 60 jail officers have identified inmates who are illegal immigrants.

Have you noticed that it seems to be the “Joe’s” that are standing up for the Republic?

Joe “the plummer”
Joe Wilson
Joe Arpaio

Just regular joes. I think I’ll change my name!

God has put him just where He wants him to be.

Obama’s admin is pushing a confrontation between federal and local authority. It will be good for this to come to a head.

Arpaio should ignore the Feds, continue doing what he’s doing, and dare them to send in federal agents to arrest him.

Racial profiling on illegal immigrants?

Tell me, what are the chances of an illegal Icelandic immigrant being found wandering around Phoenix?

Arpaio should just continue to arrest illegals. Arizona is the kidnapping capital of the United States, due largely to the Mexican drug trade spilling over our borders. Arpaio should continue bagging these dirt balls and rely on the support of the Arizona people when the inevitable confrontations with the Washington commies take place. It’s an approach all of us are going to have to embrace, given the circumstances. So we might as well begin standing up now.

...who got the last laugh?

“They took away my authority on the streets. That doesn’t matter because I will still pursue illegals on the streets of Maricopa utilizing the authority I have as the elected official,” Mr. Arpaio said Tuesday in an interview.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano ordered a comprehensive review of the 287g program shortly after taking office.

A person close to the Obama administration said some DHS officials had been hoping Mr. Arpaio would withdraw from the program altogether when confronted with a watered-down version.

Mr. Arpaio, a headline-grabbing elected official in his fifth term, said: “They thought I wasn’t going to sign it. I signed it.”

The politicians have made it almost impossible to enforce any laws against illegal immigrants. The result has been rising rates of drug trafficing and other crimes and the rise of gangs like MS-13. It appears the situation is going to get worse.

I think they want to let illegals in for the Census count. The Census form will also be printed in Spanish for the for the first time ever.

"Let them all go brag that they took away the sheriff's authority. Let them all do that. That doesn't bother me. I don't have an ego. I will continue doing the same thing," the Republican sheriff said, noting he can still enforce state immigration laws. "What has changed, other than the politics and the perception emanating from Washington?"

Sheriff Joe held a news conference and basically said nothing will change, that he still has the authority to enforce the law as he's done in the past.

——Arpaio has more officers with the special powers than any other local police agency in the country.——

What is “special” about arresting someone doing something ILLEGAL?????

Isn’t that what law enforcement officers are SUPPOSED to do???? What about this is so difficult for Washington to understand?
