Richard “RJ” Berry appears to be winning a plurality of the absentee votes posted to the Bernalillo county Web site moments ago. Berry now has 41.62 percent of the vote compared to 36.03 percent for incumbent mayor Martin Chavez and 22.18 percent for former state Pro Tem Richard Romero.

I am so glad to have been wrong (or, more to the point, overly cautious). What a great victory. They’ll be calling on Berry to run for governor next year.

If there isn’t a separate thread for the DE special elections, might as well post the results here.

Berry has now gone to 43% with only 8% left to count, even higher than the most optimistic projections. Republicans held en bloc for him, and Independents broke for him, apparently, as well. Chavez had to have seen the numbers ahead of time, which must’ve come from GOP-leaning areas.

Albuquerque Mayor

Richard J. Berry 32,273 43%

Martin Chavez (Incumbent) 26,289 35%

Richard Romero 15,967 21%

Since the lone GOP statewide officeholder, Lands Commissioner Pat Lyons, is almost non-existent on the scene (much like that guy in DE), Berry instantly becomes the big star in the NM GOP. Of course, I don’t want to make any pronouncements for future office until we see how he does as Mayor. A lot of institutional corruption in the city due to decades of Dem rule uninterrupted, and he also will have to swiftly end the status of ABQ as a “Sanctuary City” that it has been under Chavez. I hope he goes for broke. If he’s a success, Governor or Senator may await him, but not for awhile yet.

I thought Yongin was talking about the races from a bit ago, the one to fill the seat of the Dem Senate President Pro Tempore Adams, won by a Republican State Rep., and the race to fill the Rep.’s seat, also easily held by a Republican ? Was there another new one I wasn’t aware of ?

I was told NC had some local elections today, but I wasn’t following that. The ABQ one had me preoccupied. My “trendy” far-left aunt (an Anglo supporter of La Raza) is probably horrified at the results this evening, I think she is in the district that dumped a Dem on the Council for a Conservative Republican.

Albuquerque? Really?

“Shortly after 10 p.m. Berry, a Republican state representative, had corralled 42 percent of the voter. He needed to finish with at least 40 percent to win the office outright and avoid a runoff election next month.”

3 way election with 2 rats eh. Excellent. Thanks Richard Romero. :)

You locals can correct me if I’m wrong on this, but I think the real turning point in the Mayoral contest was that murder by an illegal at Denny’s back in the Summer. Berry rode that issue hard. Chavez was clearly leading up until then and he declined afterwards, getting hammered from both Berry and Romero.

It will be interesting to see what the turn out was. I’ve voted in my precinct for 12 years and stood in a line to vote that was far longer than any I’ve been in. My theory is that the Tea Party folks animated the like minded for this election. They couldn’t wait till 2010 to throw someone out of office.

Looking at some of the bond issues it looks to me like NM is for more spending of money they do not have. I don’t call that any kind of conservative victory.

If the Dems split their votes on Chavez and Romero, then I can see that the bond issues passed. If Berry gets 40% plus 1, then the remaining percent went to the two Dems. A majority of Dems still voted for the bonds.
