Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympics after the Brazilian city won a landslide victory over Madrid in the final round of voting on Friday.
-snip-
Chicago went out after polling just 18 votes in the first round, despite the eloquent speeches on their behalf made by Obama, the first sitting U.S. president to address an IOC session, and first lady Michelle Obama.

I hate to say it but I’m glad Rio won. Our narcissistic President needs to realize he can’t control the world. He thought he would influence the vote FOR the US, instead he influenced it AGAINST the US. To win that vote would only have made him believe even more in his power to make anything he wants happen.
Only 18 votes, eh? Well, ACORN is having its problems I guess.
Chicago received only 18 votes? It was supposed to be close so Obama, wifey, and Ophrah would put Chicago over the top? Where did Valerie Jarrett get her info?
Maybe Chicago was close until the IOC heard from wifey that she sat on her Dad’s lap at 20 watching the Olympics and Obama giving his speech on what the Olympics could do for Chicago not what Chicago could offer the Olympics.
I am going to be laughing the rest of the day about this.
Where would you rather be in the summer of 2016 - Chicago or Rio?
Yes, the Obamas presentation was me me me I I I but to me Rio was a no-brainer all along. The first South American Olympics in one of the most enchanting places in the world. I bet all the committee needed to know was that Rio could develop the infrastructure to make it happen.
I doubt the video of the honor student being beaten to death in the streets of Chicago helped either.
Exactly! I was so happy when I heard Chicago go out in the first round and now to find out it only got 18 votes, shows that the IOC isn’t too impressed with Obama and his wifey dressed in gold! Wonder if what they said how much they enjoyed her hid the fact that there were actually laughing behind her back at her gold outfits. That was arrogance in itself for her to wear gold. You would never know from our stupid media.
The countries voting for Chicago were Ceylon, Burma, Formosa, and Prussia.
That’s a no brainer — Rio or Chicago — RIO wins hands down.
People are saying that this is a loss to America and not Obama. I don’t know...I never cared about the Olympics at all except the year Nancy and Tonya Harding got into the cat fight....Now that was the Olympics!!!!
Chicago proposed reusing Soldier Field and then running folks about from here to there on buses.
Hmmm.
Indianapolis beat Chicago out for the 1987 Pan Am Games. Rio de Plata beat Chicago out for the 2003 Pan Am Games.
Rio de Plata? Who?!
Your post above goes very well with the picture above it - the lack of victory and the agony of defeat. Makes the gold dress even more humiliating - she was dressed for victory - how embarrassing to fail so miserably.
Good! They need to be put in their place, they are not the king and queen of the world and to make this unprecedented trip to influence the Olympic committee in favor of corrupt Chicago politicians was unbelievable. I hope they learned something.
My mom was in Brazil for a month. They were robbed in Rio a few times...watch off the wrist...necklace ripped off the neck...and tons and tons of bi-sexual and lesbian women approaching her night and day. She was telling me yesterday that although in beauty and festivities Rio wins hands down over Chicago they both are ridden with crime.
Did you know there is a big active campaign to bring the 2020 Olympics to Birmingham, Alabama? Not kidding. Apparently, the city is willing to quote give thousands of acres to developers to build whatever is needed for the events to take place there.
You dont see that kind of offer being put on the table for major cities like Chicago, NY, Los Angeles.
In my opinion Miami is the best option. Here are my reasons why:
Landshark Stadium - Home of the Dolphins
Marlins new stadium - Opens in 2011
American Airlines Arena - Miami right off the bay
Miami Arena - Built in the 80s but still hosts plenty of events
Bank Atlantic Center - Arena for the Panthers
Lockhart Stadium - FAU Football Stadium
University of Miami - Track and Field Stadium
Ft. Lauderdale Olympic Aquatic Center
Highways - Sawgrass Expressway, 595, 75, Ronald Reagan Turnpike, I-95
Airports - Ft.Lauderdale International Airport, Miami International Airport, Palm Beach International Airport
Tri-Rail - Train the runs from Miami to Palm Beach
Over 600 hotels in 3 counties
Atlantic Ocean, Miami Beach, Ft. Lauderdale Beach
Port Everglades
Why Chicago was even a consideration is beyond me. Miami has a ton to offer and is more welcoming to not only South Americans, but Latin Americans, Canadians, and the vast majority of tourists who love the place to begin with. You hold events in Broward and Dade counties...it costs you very little in tax payer dollars in comparison because you already have the venues built to support it!
Yes, you have to build new facilities and landscape etc...but you would have contracts laid out til 2020!
Obozo lost votes w/his America is was a horrible place til he was elected speech. The World liked us alot better under President Bush.
Pray for America and our Troops
But the weather would be awful... (I have a real hard time with humidity)
Where would you rather have Women's Beach Volleyball?
ACORN obviously dropped the ball. 18 votes huh..they could have taken those 18 votes and had the same people vote 20 times, then they would have won for sure
