Reporting from Washington - Chicago has been eliminated from the contest to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, a surprise development in the decision-making process by international Olympic officials.
The city was a heavy favorite at least to make it through the first round of voting, and to be a serious contender in the final round of voting for the coveted Games.
The decision dashes the hopes of U.S. boosters -- President Obama chief among them -- who had put their reputations on the line to help win the games for Chicago. The announcement came as the president and first lady headed back to Washington after making a last-minute appeal to the International Olympic Committee as it met in Copenhagen.
Tokyo was eliminated in the second round of voting, leaving Rio de Janeiro and Madrid as the remaining candidates in the final round. The IOC voted again on the two finalists, and was planning an announcement by IOC President Jacques Rogge today.
Madrid's success in reaching the final round followed an appeal by former IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch for the Spanish capital, reminding IOC members as he sought their vote, at age 89, "I am very near the end of my time."
Chicago's elimination was one of the more shocking defeats in IOC voting history. The city had long been viewed as a front-runner.
But the emotional appeals from Obama and his wife Michelle -- who both had flown to Copenhagen to make Chicago's case -- fell on deaf ears in the European-dominated IOC.
The IOC's last two experiences in the United States were marred by controversy: The 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics were sullied by a bribery scandal and logistical problems, and a bombing marred the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

Rush is doing a masterful job today analyzing this debacle and why it shows how weak Obama really is, and how the world has no respect for him or for the U.S.
