Obama draws on personal and political history in Chicago pitch
By Michael O’Brien - 10/02/09 07:18 AM ET

EXCERPT

The president drew on his background, and spoke of his having moved around oftn as a child before settling in the Windy City. Obama said he felt he never had roots in any place or culture until he game to Chicago.

He also drew on his own political history, speaking of the celebrations almost a year ago in downtown Chicago’s Grant Park after he was elected to the White House.

“Nearly one year ago, on a clear November night, people from every corner of the world gathered in the city of Chicago or in front of their televisions to watch the results of the U.S. Presidential election,” he said. “Their interest wasn’t about me as an individual. Rather, it was rooted in the belief that America’s experiment in democracy still speaks to a set of universal aspirations and ideals.”

That is scarily acurate!

Someone should send that to the IOC.

WTH is an “Olympic Movement”?

I once got a bronze medal in that. You should have seen the guy that got the gold: it killed him!

Here's something to throw into the mix. I thought NBC had purchased the American TV rights for the '14 and '16 games. That's not the case. NBC's payed through the nose for the '10 and '12 games. But lookee here...

Comcast, GE in Talks Over NBC Universal

Is GE trying to get out of the entertainment biz?

If so, could that mean they know Chicago's toast...?

Passionate Rio upstages Obama’s Chicago, Tokyo, before IOC (4th Lead)
Olympics 2008 News

By John Bagratuni Oct 2, 2009, 11:27 GMT

Copenhagen - Chicago lobbyist US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama were upstaged by a passionate Rio de Janeiro bid urging the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to bring the Olympics to South America for the first time.

‘Rio is ready, give us this chance and you will not regret it,’ said Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as Rio again presented a world map showing South America (and Africa) as a blank Olympic spot.

‘I honestly believe it’s Rio’s time ... It would send a powerful message that the Olympics belong to all continents, all humanity.’

Rio made a powerful and emotional 45-minute presentation after a Chicago pitch mainly lit up by the Obamas and a surprisingly passionate Tokyo show spearheaded by a young school girl.

But honestly, how was the entire Chicago presentation?

Uh to start with...AWFUL, EMBARRASSING, PATHETIC,. The O's totally missed the point of what the Olympics is about. They apparently think it's about them and their childhoods and their two young daughters, and Michelle's dad and blah blah blah...

I can’t believe the narcissist in chief would risk tarnishing his star power if the bid wasn’t in the bag.

This is interesting ...

http://www.monstersandcritics.com/sport/olympics2008/news/article_1504606.php/Passionate-Rio-upstages-Obama-s-Chicago-Tokyo-before-IOC-4th-Lead

Chicago pledged perfect conditions for athletes and fans, and a lasting legacy in a 45-minute presentation which had no real spark apart from the Obamas.

So that was basically the whole presentation?
Wow! That is pathetic.

I thought they would whip together something spectacular.
I hope they (Chicago) didn’t just wing it because they knew the votes were gonna go their way.

I thought the part about it being for Michelle’s dad was a joke.
I guess not. LOL!

Not to hijack the thread, but did anyone else hear that Barry is meeting with Gen. McChrystal on AF1?

Don't have to worry about leaks and/or Congress if you read the general the Riot Act while on AF1, do you, Barry?

I'm not sure. Don't think so. But you can check the link and watch for yourself and see. Maybe he read from paper. I wasn't paying attention to that really. Just couldn't believe how often he referred to himself.
