do these guys really not realize how far Downtown LA is from the beach?

About 2 1/2 hours during rush hour.

“These wave heights are higher than those predicted by computer models made soon after the earthquake that triggered the tsunami.”

How much higher?

Looks like Rincon Beach, south of Santa Barbara, CA, should be "totally tubular" about 2105 PDT this evening.

San Francisco was roughly an 8. They don’t have nine pointers in California, where the faults are “slip-faults.”

Off the coast of Washington / Oregon, nine pointers + are possible.....those are “subduction” type earthquakes. They last had one in the area in the year 1700....it sent a bad tsunami all the way to Japan.

Any connection with the tsunami in American Samoa today, I wonder?

Same event. Though tsunami pressure wave's can travel about 450-500 mph, it still takes time to cross the ocean. In the meantime as the wave spreads it loses energy as ripples from a rock in a pond lose energy as it spreads out vertically.

I think ? things are going to start to get worse day by day... more earth quakes, strange things happening with the sun, strange phenomenon with other planets, stars, and here on earth that even Obama and his henchmen can't figure out after they have called in all the “ EXPERTS “ and are frighten.

Not too big unless you are in shallow water on the coast and are sucked out into the ocean.

The energy loss occurs as the increased volume of water reaches shallower depths coinciding with the approach to shorelines. However, depending upon the shoreline, if the shoreline sloughs off at all in reaction to earthquakes or to the increased surge of water, the tsunami from over a thousand miles away can still be the cause of serious damage.

Not too big -- 8 inches to 2 feet.

Look at all that "brown" (tsunami advisory) coastline.

These 15-65 cm reading for a tsunami are less substantial than the daily tide swings of near 6 ft. A non-event.

You might notice something if it coincides with high tide.

You need to ask? Well, of course our European cousins have always been our betters, so it follows that we should bend over backward to emulate everything they do.

If you hadn't noticed, you'll almost never hear a university trained egghead using anything but the metric system when describing dimensions, distances, or volumes.

It's become something of a liberal flag. Americans who use the metric system in conversation are almost assuredly pompous libs.

This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard here on FR. The scientific community uses the metric system because it gives them a measuring system consistent with what scientists use around the world, and because, well, it's just superior in every way. It's consistent and based on 10's (a kilometer is 1000 meters, a centimeter is 1/100 of a meter, a millimeter is 1/10 of a centimeter, etc.) as opposed to the absurd system we use here (how many feet in a mile again?).

And if it is really a liberal plot, then perhaps you'd care to explain why our military uses it.

I do and I'm neither liberal nor pompous. I did, however, major in Chemistry in college.
