Police: Homeowner shoots burglary suspect
Houston Chronicle ^ | Sep 18 | Mike Glenn

A teenage burglary suspect remains hospitalized after he was shot Friday morning while breaking into a home in southeast Houston, authorities said.

The owner of the home in the 8100 block of Gladstone was alone about 10:15 a.m. when he heard noises coming from the side of the house.

After hearing the sound of breaking glass, the homeowner, 42, grabbed his pistol and went to investigate. He pulled back a bedroom curtain and was confronted by the suspect, who was removing shards of the broken glass from the window, police said.

The homeowner was startled and fired a single shot. The suspect was struck but fled along with two other people. All three were taken into custody a short time later, police said.

The teenager was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition.

Burglarizing in Texas? If he was feeling suicidal, surely there were people he could have called?

Well we all know that the homeowner was lucky he lives in Texas where sanity prevails. If this had happened in a lunatic state like say New York, it could have turned out very differently. The homeowner would probably be in trouble in New York.

Had to be a newbie - breaking in during the middle of the day like that. Hopefully, this was the lesson this kid needed to find a more honest line of work.

Oh, and I’m guessing the crook is one of the 30 million with no health insurance. My heart bleeds for the guy.

Wonder if there was something in that house he really wanted.

On the other hand, the daytime break-in would make some sense from a Texas law point of view. He wouldn’t be able to be legally shot in the yard during the day, only at night.

“A teenage burglary suspect remains hospitalized”

Does being stored in the hospital morgue still count as being...”hospitalized”?

The surprising thing is that the homeowner is a lousy shot. This is TX, after all.

Tip: Always make sure the burglar is taken from the scene of the crime to the morgue, not the hospital.

If he was breaking in, was he merely a "suspect?"

Damn, he should have been able to put at least 2 rounds into the punk before the body hit the ground. Now we have to pay for the cretin’s hospitalization, trial, imprisonment (if any), etc., etc.,

“A teenage burglary suspect”

I thought if no people were involved, it was classified as a burglary. If there are people involved, it is a robbery.

It’s not that surprising to me. I couldn’t find a place to target shoot unless I wanted to pay exorbitant range fees while living in Texas. It was easy to get out of practice there.

The thief didn't intend to run into any people. Someone who intentionally threatens another and demands his stuff is a robber. If he's trying to steal stuff and not run into any people, he's a burglar.

Around these parts this is when virtually all burglaries take place....the noob's mistake was not properly casing the property.
