Sept 23, 2009 — Imagine never having to wash your windows again. That would be a huge boon not only for window washers on skyscrapers, but for astronauts on the space shuttle or space station. It may become a reality, thanks to the lotus plant...

Isn’t it amazing how much reverse engineering is involved in new inventions such as Lotus Glass?! :o)

Glass houses.

I should wash down the vinyl siding twice a year, but I don’t. Dirt sticks, algae grows. At least paint chalks off and is self-cleaning.

How would it be a boon to window washers? They’ll be put out of work.

It won’t be a boon to window washers any more than cars were a boon to buggy whip manufacturers, or hard drives were a boon to punch card techs.

But like any other labor-saving tech, it will boost efficiency and free up human capital for more productive uses, making the world a little better off.

Oh and you won’t have guys dangling 30 stories up...

Something tells me that this writer grew up pretty comfortably in life and doesn't realize why people work at dirty, difficult jobs.

But nothing will free up the American working man as much as immigration does.

Interesting...I have a window cleaning business. There’s already several types of coatings that claim to cut down the need for window cleaning. Fortunately most of these are ineffective and/or cost prohibitive. I suspect that glass made with this coating will be much more expensive than other types of glass. It will come to down to cost...even if the coating is 100% effective at keeping windows clean...which is highly doubtful. Window cleaning is here to stay.

Can you imagine how long it would take before even a small percentage of the windows out there are converted to Lotus Glass? There’s an old joke amongst those in the asbestos removal business that kind of applies here:

“It took 100 years to put in, and it will take a thousand years to take out.”

I don’t think you will have to worry about your window business anytime soon!

And that’s presuming that man can be as effective as God in the design....very doubtful. :-)

Indeed, one might even go so far as to say it’s a sure thing!

Provided you consider unemployment a “boon.”
