Nuts - prayers out for the second pilot.

I hate hearing about these things - especially now that the French government is more manly than ours in D.C.

Perhaps the tugs that normally pull the Charles de Gaulle were moving at a different speed.

Is it just me or does that seem like a very small air group for a ship that big.

Prayers out for the missing pilot. Med is warm this time of year so lets hope his radio is just out and they will find him bobbing around with a good story to tell.

Ouch! €70 million each, not to mention the lost pilot.

Did they collide with one another or what?

My guess is that they both surrendered to gravity, even though they had the power to overcome it.

The French aircraft carrier is only about half the overall size of US super carriers. And you are correct. Why bother if you are only going to carry 7 fixed wing and 3 helos?

Crashing alone into the sea is never a good thing. Prayers up that the other pilot is found alive and well.

I believe that aircraft taking off from a carrier do so as the ship is running into the wind. Since France's only aircraft carrier has only one mode of travel, "full reverse", taking off is problematic.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Prayers for the pilots. I have no doubt of their patriotism or courage.

Yep, I just checked their site and it looks like it is supposed to carry 40 birds. But they list the top speed at 27 kts. That’s crawling for a nuke. Either they are keeping the real speed classified (we list the Nimitz class as 30+ with the emphasis on the +) or they never worked out the problems they were having with the ships reactors.

That's what I'm wondering - a mid air collision? Maybe they were in formation and the lead made a mistake.

Naval aviation (regardless of Country or equipment) -- some of the most dangerous flying around.

It’s been deployed for 3 days.

Forgive me but I don’t remember how long the small Fr carriers spent in retrofit and not a one sailed the ocean.

I think they have two, just not sure.

No just the one. The sold the Foch to Brazil back in 1999 or 2000. Before the CDG came on line. What is funny is that looking at the stats they lost capacity in the deal. The CdG only carries one more aircraft, is slower, and has the same unreplenished endurance. Of course being a nuke replenishment is a lot easier, since it is only food and aviation fuel. But you would think if you are going to build a nuke you would at least have something comparable with the Enterprise.

Three days is about the maximum they can stay out without breaking down. IIRC, the De Gaulle’s nuclear power plant doesn’t have enough cooling to operate anywhere near the maximum speed and the propeller once fell off the shaft.
