Ambulances race to Byrd's home By: Manu Raju September 22, 2009 10:16 AM EST
Ambulances and fire trucks were dispatched to the Northern Virginia home of Sen. Robert Byrd Tuesday morning.
A neighbor of the 91-year-old West Virginia Democrat said several ambulances were outside his residence in McLean, Va., and a Byrd spokesman said the senator suffered a fall in his home. An officer at the McLean Fire Department said that a unit was dispatched at 9:10 to the address where Byrd lives, but he declined to comment on the substance of the response.
Byrd the longest-serving senator in the nations history has been absent from the Senate for much of the year and has been in and out of the hospital battling various ailments.
Byrd apparently stood up too fast this morning in his home and fell down, said Jesse Jacobs, a spokesman for the senator. To err on the side of caution his caregiver called an ambulance. He was taken to the hospital where he is currently being checked out. At this point in time there is no indication that he will be admitted.

There are many times when I ran rescue in Virginia that we needed the assistance of firefighters to carry a person up or down stairs, etc. Think Nadler...think second alarm...

I have my political differences with Byrd, but I sincerely wish him a speedy recovery. He is one of the few RATs who actually has some knowledge and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution.

Senators like Thurmond, Kennedy, and Byrd are just props. Their staff write and run everything. Sen Quentin Burdik (sp?), D-ND, was so old and feeble it was found is staff was voting for him whenever possible. Not sure how that happens but either way not an eyebrow was raised. Since he was a Dim it didn't matter; if it was a Pubby the Dims would have had a conniption fit.

WVA will be voting for Byrd 15 years after he’s gone. Everything in the state is named after him, but the state. He’s responsible for more federal jobs in WVA than any 10 presidents.

The governor of WV is a Democrat. What happens if there is a vacancygubernatorial appointment or special election? First the governor gets to replace Byrd's name on all the stuff around the state with his own! After that he could appoint himself as Senator so he can get a better retirement and health care plan.

The demise of fat teddy and possibly Byrd represents a shift in power. I fear there will be even worse to come in their place.

what is the policy re: Governor replacing a Senator?
well, I guess current policy is irrelevant...they can just change it to suit them if needed...

Volunteer FD only get paid when they show upIn MD, funds were allocated to departments from county fire taxes on the basis of calls and responses. That money would keep the lights on, provide fuel, and some equipment, the remainder was raised through dinners, raffles, and donations.
Individuals did not get paid for volunteer firefighting/EMS, even though there is now a retirement fund for qualifying service (20 years, iirc).
