What It Feels Like To Be Unemployed [Polling Data]

While Ben Bernanke may be right that the recession is "very likely over at this point," his caveat--"it's still going to feel like a very weak economy for some time as many people will still find that their job security and their employment status is not what they wish it was" is borne out by hard economic data.

When asked about who should be mainly responsible for helping people who are laid off, 51% of the unemployed said the government, 33% said workers themselves and 17% said their previous employer. The surveyors also asked about the most important service government could provide in response to a layoff, and unemployment benefits and checks were the top response. Job placement services were a distant second.

Seventy-six percent said the economic situation had had a major impact on their families. Seventy-seven percent of the unemployed who were looking for work reported feeling stressed, and 65% said they were anxious, but two-thirds also said they were eager for a new start. Perhaps surprisingly, almost as many, 43%, were optimistic about finding a job in the near future as were pessimistic, 47%.

Government statistics like the unemployment rate are invaluable, but they cannot give us a numerical sense of what it is like to be unemployed. Kudos to the Heldrich Center for providing the raw material.

Why is unemployment so high? Stimulus bill failure?

No growth till tax cuts for the rich! Hoarding is the game for now, including all those seasonally employed construction workers

The hardest part of being unemployed is watching my cat slowly die from kidney disease since I cannot afford the expensive medications/treatments to extend his life. We can live without the extra food, going out, golf, etc.

Scariest thing I've heard lately?

"Having a job-- that's the new 'wealth...'"

The expiration of the Bush tax cuts in 2010 should be a job incentivizer. Whenever this economy does recover, and it could be a while, it will not be because of any policy Obama or his Keynesian economic gurus dream up, it will be despite of it. At which point this bombastic narcissist will take full credit.

I am sorry about your cat. Our pets depend on us so much. Back in 2007, my beagles got into a bottle of motrin. It cost $1700 to restore them to health. We would not be able to do that today. Hubby lost job last Nov. He is now working for 1/5 of what he made. We are doing ok-no health insurance, little debt.

Have you noticed that the media keeps equating any recovery on Wall Street as a sign that the overall economy must also be in recovery.

People have to realize that there is no longer a relationship between Wall Street and Main Street. Especially in a “global economy.” Wall Street couldn’t care less about Main Street.

No such thing as a jobless recovery.
I’ve become a stay at home Dad, homeschooling our 3.5 year old daughter. My unemployment benefits have run out, and where we live, there are no jobs. Thank goodness my wife still has a good paying job working in a dental lab.

Yes, I have. They tell us the leading indicators are up. What I see that's up are unemployment, loan defaults, foreclosures, and bank failures.
