When President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad decided to go on his annual visit to New York this month, it probably seemed like a good idea at the time. The Iranian leader, re-elected in June amid widespread allegations of vote rigging, desperately needed to restore credibility at home and abroad. With the results of the contested election confirmed by the authorities and his government sworn in last month, he may have concluded that opposition to his rule was weakening, not least because scores of his opponents had been arrested or intimidated. He probably calculated that turning up for the UN General Assembly, alongside President Obama, Gordon Brown and other leaders, would improve his standing on the world stage and make him look statesman-like at home.
Yesterday he may have regretted that decision, amid signs that the trip, scheduled for the middle of next week, may backfire. Street protests by tens of thousands of opposition supporters in Tehran and other Iranian cities demonstrated that the challenge to his leadership is far from over. Similar protests are likely to dog him in New York. This time Iranian expatriates will probably be protesting alongside American Jews, angered at Mr Ahmadinejads repeated denial of the Holocaust and his prediction that Israel will soon cease to exist.
For a start, George W Bush no longer offers a tempting target ... A flurry of recent diplomatic moves in Europe may also make life more difficult for the Iranian leader. The Obama Administration this week unilaterally dropped Americas planned missile defence shield in eastern Europe. Although it was designed to prevent Iranian ballistic missiles attacking the West, it was regarded by Russia as a threat to its security...

“If I were in New York, I would be out there with the combined Jewish-Iranian forces.”
I can NOT believe we would let the SOB in...
Rudi Guiliani, pick up on line one.
Where’s a good sniper when you need one.
Israel is watching very closely. This would be a great time to smack Iran.
“combined Jewish-Iranian forces”
I think a few hundred shoes thrown at this twit would be great.
We let him in every year.
We have Tea Parties and Townhalls; the Iranian's are marching (being gunned down) in the street.
If I were in New York, tell me that thought didn't make you shudder?
I live a couple of miles from DC and am there most of the time, so New York is only an increase in my regular, ongoing shudder. I like going to New York occasionally, there’s always something interesting to do, and it has great energy. But I can’t imagine living there.
Reasonably priced shoes can be obtained at the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or outside your local neighborhood mosque.
Bret Baier just reported on FOX that a Helmsley hotel in NYC cancelled a large party to be held there becuse they learned MadMoodwould be attending...
Thanks to the fact the UN is here. One of the best things we could do for our country would be to send that bunch packing. They are absolutely worthless. What little good they manage to accomplish, in spite of their best efforts to the contrary, could be done much cheaper and a lot more effectively by any number of faith-based organizations here in the US.
It's bad enough The One turned his back on the Iranian dissidents when they mustered up the courage to make a move, now we welcome their adversary into out country.
BTW, what ever happened to the plans of Qaddafi to set up tent in NJ? I've lost track of all the enemies of this country that are being feted by the current administration.
You are preaching to the choir, and on top of everything else, American taxpayers provide a huge percentage of the UN budget. I have been saying for at least five years that they should move UN headquarters to Caracas. I’m sure they’d all love to go there.
So, best case scenario from Ahmadinejad's point of view is a little discreet butt-kissing toward Putin, who makes a public show of disapproval of Iran's activities and quietly increases their very lucrative commercial relationship. 0bama gets his photo-op, declares victory and lauds himself for being more effective than Bush, and everybody goes home happy. Especially the Iranians.
Worst case scenario? That's also the worst case scenario. Because Iran gets the bomb.
Me too. But Sunday I will join the Iranians here on the streets of Seattle.
For a couple of days, obama might not be the most anti-American person on US soil.
