Irving Kristol, 89, a forceful essayist, editor and university professor who became the leading architect of neoconservatism, which he called a political and intellectual movement for disaffected ex-liberals like himself who had been "mugged by reality," died Friday at the Capital Hospice in Arlington.
He spent much of his career in New York but had for the last two decades lived at the Watergate apartments in the District. He died of complications from lung cancer, said his son, William Kristol, the founder and editor of the conservative Weekly Standard magazine.

That would be, Ronald Reagan himself!
Irving Kristol was the FATHER of the neoconservative movement. A movement more progressive, aka. liberal, in its nature than conservative.
Ron Paul? He’s the shrimp-subsidy guy, right?
Sounds like his version of the left's race card: saying something automatically makes you racist/anti-semite.
Precisely!
A friend of mine wrote an article the other day mentioning the Bilderbergers. The editor cut that portion of the article out saying that "ANY mention of the Bilderbergers was anti-Semitic". As my writer friend said, the only Jewish Bilderberger he even knew of was George Soros, so that's a non-starter.
More like a movement for liberals who wanted to pretend they were conservative without actually giving up their statist, quasi-fascist, Big Government tendencies.
Sorry, never heard of him.
But Billy and Weakly Standard are not particularly helpful to The Movement, IMHO. Pinkshirts. They represent precisely 17 “republicans” in DC & suburbs.
He should be proud of what he has left behind -
Wm F Buckley, not so much....
RIP, and prayers for the Kristol family. Great minds.
Oh, GO AWAY - and how shameful to crash a thread dedicated to the passing of a great man and thinker - you POS...
You mean, like McCain supporters?
He is more well known for his bestselling books and insurgent campaign to audit the Federal Reserve.
Did you see the ‘Audit the Fed Hits 290 Co Sponsors’ thread?

That was a nice surprise for Constitution Day!
Yes, Ron Paul is a brilliant man. He intends to highlight the Fed’s abuse of power by having it audited . . . by the government. Where did we find such a giant?
Trying to be balanced ... I think the differences between neoconservatives and paleoconservatives are as follows:
1. Paleocons believe in God; Neocons believe that belief in God is healthy for the nation
2. Paleocons believe that our rights are truly God-given; neocons believe that it is good that our rights are SAID TO BE God-given
3. Paleocons believe that the world is a difficult place so foreign policy needs to be openly cynical and self-interested; Neocons believe that the best foreign policy depends on both being cunning and tough, but in the service of openly-declared democratic ideals (i.e. cynicism is a self-fulfiulling prophecy).
4. Paleocons believe that private property rights are ends in themselves; neocons believe that property rights are important because they facilitate the functioning of a moderate democratic polity
Isolationism has it’s roots in liberalism, ie the UNIONS.
That’s bull... it’s a simple cop out for dual loyalist militant socialists to deflect critism from actual conservatives and patriots.
Which they abandoned after their beloved Soviet Union was invaded by the Nazis.
Considering the guy (and his son) were card carrying members, I would consider him as anti-communist as his ideaological hero, Leon Trotsky.
Did you type that with a strait face?
Non-interventionism, not so much.
You mean “old right” as in the John Birch Society? Pat Buchanan? Yeah, I get what you’re about.
“No, spoken like a true conservative...a real, old right conservative.
The ones that favor bigger government and higher taxes?”
No, those are the neos. Nothing says freedom like bankster bailouts, surveilence and “free speech zones.”
