The Washington Post ^ | September 18, 2009 | Adam Bernstein

Posted on 09/18/2009 1:13:45 PM PDT by EveningStar

Irving Kristol, 89, a forceful essayist, editor and university professor who became the leading architect of neoconservatism, which he called a political and intellectual movement for disaffected ex-liberals like himself who had been "mugged by reality," died Friday at the Capital Hospice in Arlington.

He spent much of his career in New York but had for the last two decades lived at the Watergate apartments in the District. He died of complications from lung cancer, said his son, William Kristol, the founder and editor of the conservative Weekly Standard magazine.

McCain had supporters?

Sure. The media and the DNC. Until May 2008.

>”McCain had supporters?”

Sure! Besides his fans in the legacy media, he could count on Mitt Guiliani’s disappointed, saddened RINO herd.

Of course, they were a drop in the ocean compared to the Palinites that came out to rescue his campaign from total oblivion.

By your definition, Thomas Jefferson would be a quintessential Paleocon! Which would be a big surprise to the Paleocons I’ve read, since they tend to denigrate the significance of Jefferson and the importance of the Declaration.

The only sarcasm is where you imply that the good folks at Vote View and we put politicians up there with Jesus.

The numbers speak for themselves:

3319 GEORGIA D MCDONALD, LARRY 0.851
3320 TEXAS R PAUL, RON 0.882

I'm not talking about Vote View (never heard of them until recently), I'm regarding a lot of Paul's supporters who treat him like some sort of Messiah. The fact is, Paul does not have the leadership skills to get a bill passed. Phil Gramm said of his bills that he "can't get any out of committee because they are so poorly worded and lack any detail as to how to accomplish what he is asking". On the Issues has his record at "Moderate Libertarian", the ACU has his record as in the 80s, very close to McCain. The National Taxpayers Union has him as a Moderate Conservative, right in the middle of the pack and have labeled him as one of the worst porkers in congress in their "Pig Book". He actually is the second worst porker in Texas after Ms. Lee of Houston.

You are new so I'll cut you some slack, but this site has dug through every bill he has presented and every vote, we found him very, very lacking. He is nothing but words.

I do hope he has better luck with his fed bill, it is the first bill he has written beyond simple statements that has any chance it seems.

I am a proponent of paleo conservatism (as opposed to neo conservatism)....I expect the newbie might have been doing the same...

.....the neo-con thing is so GW Bush(who considering the $h!t we have now is a Reagan or a Goldwater in comparison).

I’m not surprised you don’t like addressing the fact that Vote View puts Dr. Paul below even Larry McDonald on their list of congressmen in order of liberal to conservative.

I wouldn’t want to argue with Vote View, run by a poli sci prof who does such things for a living at a major research university, either.

The ACU needs to recalibrate if their (NeoCon? SoCon? TheoCon?) methods say Dr. Paul is anything but a strict Constitutional conservative.

If you can name a better fighter for LIFE and LIBERTY than Ron Paul among the rest of Congress, PLEASE DO SO.

Do you like American Gold Eagles? Thank Dr. Paul:

“In 1985, Ron Paul and other congressmen challenged our country’s currency system, which was monopolized by Federal Reserve Notes (FRNs) — the familiar greenbacks in American wallets. The congressmen successfully pursued the Gold Bullion Coin Act, which required the U.S. government to mint and place gold coins in denominations of $50, $25, $10 and $5 into circulation based on demand.”

As for your claims to seniority providing validity, I find them false.

Here is Dr. Paul defending LIFE, with great Freeper support, in 2003:

Neocons should leave “nation building” to Christian missionaries.

And stop killing our heroes in order to make it safe for their corporate buddies.

What did Neoconservatism ever do to protect our borders?! To stop China from buying us up?! To prevent the growth of socialism at home???!

“And is Bill Kristol’s mother’s name Gertrude Himmelfarb?”

Yes. She is one of my heros. A very intelligent and conservative woman. Young William needed to spend more time at HER knee!

Back in the early years of my reading The Wall Street Journal, they had a "board of contributors" which included Irving Kristol and Arthur Schlessinger, Jr. I could not but notice that whenever I read an article that made me say, "Wow! This is great stuff!" I would look up at the byline and sure as anything it would be written by Irving Kristol. Conversely, there would be articles which I would reject out of hand, and glance up at the byline and sure as anything it would be by Arthur Schlessinger, Jr.

Irving Kristol Dies at 89

Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD.
Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.
Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.
And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

When the NeoCons came into the GOP they were accomodated, but they were not the GOP's driving force in foreign policy.

Until GW Bush put them in charge and they drove the GOP into the dirt.

You can thank the NeoCons for the republican bloodbaths in 2006 and 2008.

Reagan didn’t believe in nation building, which made him successful where others failed. Sure, he authorized certain covert activities that ended up blowing up in our faces ( and which I disagree with from a philosophical standpoint). But he never got us bogged down somewhere to drain our resources and leave a wake of bodies.
