Virginia Governor’s Race Now a Toss-up (48 McDonnell, 46 Deeds - McDonnell sinking fast)
Rasmussen Reports ^ | September 17, 2009 | Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 09/17/2009 1:00:06 PM PDT by St. Louis Conservative

The race to become the next governor of Virginia has gotten a lot closer. Right now, it’s effectively a toss-up between Republican Robert F. McDonnell and Democrat R. Creigh Deeds.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Virginia voters finds McDonnell attracting 48% of the vote while Deeds picks up 46%. Two weeks ago, McDonnell held a nine-point advantage. In August, McDonnell was up by eight.

All of those figures include “leaners.” Leaners are those who initially indicate no preference for either of the candidates but answer a follow-up question and say they are leaning towards a particular candidate. Premium Members can review the data without leaners and complete demographic crosstabs.

The survey two weeks ago was conducted shortly after The Washington Post ran news stories about a thesis paper written by McDonnell in 1989. The thesis reflected very conservative views on the role of women in society and other topics. Fifty-two percent (52%) of voters now say the writings are at least somewhat important in terms of how they will vote. That’s up from 36% in the previous survey. The number of unaffiliated voters who consider the writings important is up to 47%.

The Washington Post endorsement of Deeds played a key role in helping him win the Democratic nomination earlier this year. Columnnist Michael Barone voiced the frustration of some Republicans by saying that “the news editors of the Post seem to be using their front page once again to defeat the Republican candidate, Bob McDonnell, and elect Democrat Creigh Deeds.” (Want a free daily e-mail update? The country watches this race closely. How I’d love to see the pubs take this state. Think there’s a chance?

Dear Ms. Fishtalk:

Several years ago, in a friendly manner, I attempted to fill you in on politics in Delaware after you had recently moved there. You rebuffed my overtures of both friendship and knowledge and basically told me to stay out of Delaware politics because you knew better.

I am now asking you to do the same in regard to Virginia politics. If you wish information about Virginia politics I would suggest you ask Virginians far more knowledgeable than myself as opposed to non-Virginians.

I pinged 3 of them just for your edification.

Wow. Well hello to you too.

I do not remember what you speak of because by your own admission you said it was “several years ago”. This gives me notion that you are a small sad person holding a very long grudge.

Then I asked, with no pushiness but a sincere quizzical request, if there was a chance to take the state of Virginia.

what a snotty answer. Are you proud of yourself having held this grudge all these years? Go back and read your post and pretend you didn’t write it. Would you think highly of the commenter?

Lookit, you go to hell, okay? I in no way insinuated myself, IN NO WAY, into Virginia politics. As for me telling you to stay out of Delaware politics, well lookit, I don’t sit around nursing grudges for years having a life and everything. I do know I am a person who loves to discuss politics and I kind of doubt I’d just very meanly cut off someone like that but hey, you can say I said something nasty and I can’t really prove I didn’t. I’m going on my own disposition and I think there’s probably more to this story than you’re revealing. But you got your long wished-for attack in so you must be happy. And by the way, do you still beat your wife?

You sad, sad pathetic person.

I’m outta here.

People need to learn to take responsibility for their own crap. Virginia seems quite happy electing democrats, lately.

I made a harmless request to another poster on this thread, having NO idea whether the person was from Virginia. The fine, fine and personable GABZ pinged you to show me my sins.

Y’all might be nice people but maybe you need to consider your friends. As much as I’m curious about the Virginia race, I must leave this thread and let the very tiny, small GABZ take control for some sin I committed years ago.

I will ignore any further responses to this thread.

There is no need to act as if Gov. Palin is everyone’s secret antidote. Candidates need to take responsibility for their own campaigns. I can hear the whining now from people saying, if only Gov. Palin had campaigned for so-and-so, he wouldn’t have lost. If Gov. Palin feels it’s worthwhile, she will step out and campaign, but elections for others will not be won nor lost because of her and people better not hang any losses on her. Her political capital is precious and should be guarded.

False. Heard response ads on the radio today.

And you have the nerve to call me small and sad?

I’m glad you are leaving this thread, it is far better off without your vileness.

Once again, I was polite and you responded with name calling and nasty comments that I would never post on this forum.

I rarely ever hit the abuse button on FR, and I won’t be doing it here, but it won’t surprise me if someone else does. I hope no one does, because your post needs to be left to show the difference in postings.

NRO Campaign Spot

Creigh Deeds’s Obsessive-Compulsive Thesis Talk Draws Groans

Even if you don’t buy into the assessment of the good folks at the Washington Times, you can take it from the AP reporters on scene: “Deeds, however, came back to the thesis several times. When he did so near the end of the debate, groans came from some in the crowd of about 500 northern Virginia business leaders.”

I saw a poll a couple days ago. While it didn’t show a large overall lead for McDonell it had him up 5 in NOVA (McDonnell has consistently lead in NOVA), up 15 in SW VA and leading among men while tied among women. Those splits don’t look good for the rat Deeds. If he’s losing NOVA (he’d need a big win there) and is tied among women he is not gonna win.

Public Policy Polling analysts say the big leads McDonnell and Chris Christie had in August were due to apathetic Obama supporters. The PPP believed if Obama supporters were showed up at the polls, the Dems would win Va and Jersey.

The narrowing of the gaps appears that Obama supporters expressing interest in the Governor races in Jersey and Va.

The shameless WaPO took McDonnell off balance. Lets hope that Deeds’s sub par debate performance stops him from gaining any traction.

Many conservatives want to remain principled. They feel the methods the Left uses to win are dirty. Thus they avoid Alinsky methods in the quest to remain “pure”.

Hannah Giles & James O’Keefe belong to the 18-29 year old age group. Many older FReepers dismiss the 18-29 year old crowd as a bunch of brain dead Obama worshipers and have written off that age group. Conservatives should make an effort to appeal the youth. Young conservatives can provide fresh perspectives just like Hannah Giles & James O’Keefe have done.

This says that Congressman Gerry Connolly and his wife have a teenage daughter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerry_Connolly

Please tell me that Gerry Connolly isn’t a closeted homosexual. VA’s Congressmen include Rick Boucher and Robert Scott (both of whom are rumored to be light in the loafers), and until a few years ago had Ed Schrock (who was caught on tape soliciting a gay prostitute). How could yet another U.S. Representative from VA be (allegedly) gay?

I understand. It’s the same mentality people use to fight “humane” wars. Except you know what? The most humane war is the SHORTEST war!
