Virginia Governor’s Race Now a Toss-up (48 McDonnell, 46 Deeds - McDonnell sinking fast)
Rasmussen Reports ^ | September 17, 2009 | Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 09/17/2009 1:00:06 PM PDT by St. Louis Conservative

The race to become the next governor of Virginia has gotten a lot closer. Right now, it’s effectively a toss-up between Republican Robert F. McDonnell and Democrat R. Creigh Deeds.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Virginia voters finds McDonnell attracting 48% of the vote while Deeds picks up 46%. Two weeks ago, McDonnell held a nine-point advantage. In August, McDonnell was up by eight.

All of those figures include “leaners.” Leaners are those who initially indicate no preference for either of the candidates but answer a follow-up question and say they are leaning towards a particular candidate. Premium Members can review the data without leaners and complete demographic crosstabs.

The survey two weeks ago was conducted shortly after The Washington Post ran news stories about a thesis paper written by McDonnell in 1989. The thesis reflected very conservative views on the role of women in society and other topics. Fifty-two percent (52%) of voters now say the writings are at least somewhat important in terms of how they will vote. That’s up from 36% in the previous survey. The number of unaffiliated voters who consider the writings important is up to 47%.

The Washington Post endorsement of Deeds played a key role in helping him win the Democratic nomination earlier this year. Columnnist Michael Barone voiced the frustration of some Republicans by saying that “the news editors of the Post seem to be using their front page once again to defeat the Republican candidate, Bob McDonnell, and elect Democrat Creigh Deeds.” (Want a free daily e-mail update? “McDonnell’s support remains a bit more solid than Deeds’. Eighty-one percent (81%) of those who plan to vote for the Republican candidate are certain they will not change their mind. Seventy-four percent (74%) of Deeds supporters say the same. Among those who are certain, McDonnell leads by seven percentage points.”

....why was it worst couple of weeks....

Bad article in WaPo about his college thesis or term paper plus he dropped the big F bomb during a live interview. Kind of a macaca moment.

Are ONLY Democrats allowed to have their school records sealed? Seems like these sorts of things systematically defeat Rs. Didn’t Obama get elected when divorce papers of his opponent were made public? How weird is that when all of his records are not to be seen - no grades, no thesis papers, nothing.

The bad thing about such a poll is that if they can show them “close” then they can cheat at the ballot box and then just count until the D. wins. If this keeps up, the Republicans are going to have to start running as Democrats and then change their stripes once they are in.

Love your editorializing in the headline. It's so nice that so many Freepers are around willing to carry the water for the left.

But let's roll the video tape:

1) McDonnell's numbers have not moved. He is not "sinking"

2) This is only 500 people in a one day poll, and it includes leaners.

3) Without leaders numbers are 47-42

4) Rasmussen has been all over the map on this race. The last six polls

+6d

+3r

+8r

+9r

+2r

5) MOE is 4.5

NOW, while we do not panic, we don't ignore this.

What this represents is Deeds shoring up some of, but not all of his base. Internals show McDonnell leading in most areas. In addition, McDonnell has a huge cash on hand lead.

But we don't ingore it. We work that much harder. Obama is still hurting Deeds.

McDonnell blasted Deeds away in today's debate.

Even the media is noticing Deeds is waffling on positions.

And, today (maybe yesterday) Deeds jumped on the Jimmah Carter "if you don't like Obama you're a racist" train.

So with all due respect Mr. "St. Louis Conservative" take your doom and gloom elsewhere. We're in the middle of this fight and we're fighting to win.

All you're doing is aiding and abetting the enemy.

Yes. I haven’t been paying much attention, but he won’t win by moving to the left. He’ll just turn off the rest of his base.

Maybe they stopped sending emails to buffoons who were trashing the campaign without knowing the facts.

I'm getting plenty of info. And I assure you, it's not just because I'm better looking than you.

Amen. Jesus, don’t these people EVER read Alinsky? I gave a talk to College Republicans last night and I asked now many had ever read Rules for Radicals. None. I said THAT is your assignment. You must understand this book.

Rigged poll ~ WarshPost has also forgotten that the last time they successully manipulated a state election they were able to call out the otherwise nascent KuKluxKlan vote by running against George Allen's mother for having been Jewish during WWII.

This time what are they going to do?

Maybe they could delve into Deeds' sex life or something ~ boost him as a boon to the gay vote in Old Town (Alexandria) possibly?

Not that we need forget about the Post, what we really need to do is look ahead to what they may come up with the week before the election, and whatever it is they'll have is going to be lowdown, dirty, crawling in the gutter, and the sort of thing you wouldn't take home to your mother.

There's nothing too low for the Post.

McDonnell is not responding to Creigh Deeds ads. Creigh Deeds is running as a Republican.

You mean Congresscritter Canoli?

He's just an ignoramuous who happens to love young El Salvadoran children. He's got plenty of them in his district, and probably looked at the ACORN support for the brothels as an employment opportunity for his district (which I unfortunately live in).

This guy has NO KIDS and his "beard" (or wife I think she styles herself) looks like one of those professional Leftwingtard oh so politically correct haters.

Frankly, I can't stand these people.

McDonnell is not responding to Creigh Deeds ads.

Pappy that's bull because McDonnell is driving the conversation. Maybe he's not playing in Blacksburg, but he is in Richmond.

I heard a pretty hard hitting McDonnell ad today describing a Deeds tax scheme to raise gas taxes when the cost ws at a max and continuing to raise the tax each and every year fo 9 more years.

Seemed pretty strong to me.

I drove down Va 8 from I 81 through Floyd to US 58 yesterday and Deeds signs, big ones, outnumbered McDonnell signs be a big factor.

No, I was referring to Jim Moran, representing Fairfax, Reston, Alexandria, Alrington, and Falls Church. Given this illustrious list of cities bouyed and staid by government largess, I guess he voted in a way he thought his peeps would like.

Still, how do you look yourself in the mirror after voting to use the fruits of the hard work of others to fund a criminal enterprise of hypocrisy for your own self-interest? Seriously, how can one do that?

rigged poll again?

No this is a Rasmussen poll.  McDonnell is still ahead in spite of the full on media assault.

Clam down. McDonnell's run a defensive campaign since he took the lead after the Dem primary. That's a fact. It was a strategic decision made by Tim Phillips, his general consultant and a very bright guy. Now, however, it is time to fight. The NRA endorsement of McDonnell was HUGE. Deeds’ performance at the debate today was horrible. Obama is a big problem for him. This race ain't over by a long shot. However, it is time to kick it into high gear. Whining about the Washington Post and trying to explain away what he wrote in a college term paper isn't going to win. Laying out a strong conservative case for why Bob McDonnell should be hired as governor over Deeds will. At the moment that isn't happening. However, I expect it will. Regarding the regular volunteer requests, I'm glad you are being given a chance to help out. For some wacky reason I'm not. As long as it isn't a case of an over confident staff then I'm fine with it.
