Nassau DA: Hofstra Student Made Up Gang Rape Story

Charges Dropped Against 4 Men Under Arrest; Search For 5th Called Off; DA, Hempstead School Release Statements

The student who alleged she was gang raped by five men inside a Hofstra University dormitory bathroom on Sunday has admitted to making the entire story up, the Nassau County District Attorney's office confirmed on Wednesday night.

Charges against the four men arrested have since been dropped.

Nassau County DA Kathleen Rice issued the following statement on Wednesday evening:

Moments ago my office moved to dismiss all charges against four men accused of committing a sexual assault on the campus of Hofstra University.

Late this evening, during the continuation of the Nassau County Police Department's investigation of the allegation, and under questioning by my office's chief trial attorney and chief sex crimes prosecutor, the alleged victim of the sexual assault admitted that the encounter that took place early Sunday morning was consensual.

Following the interview, my office moved quickly to appear before a night court judge to dismiss all charges and request that the judge order the individuals' immediate release.

Nassau County Judge Robert Bruno dismissed the charges and ordered their release. I have launched an immediate criminal investigation into the statements and reports given by the woman in connection with this incident. Further details regarding this investigation will be released at a later time.

The four men, Hofstra student Rondell Bedward, 21, Stalin Felipe, 19, and Jesus L. Ortiz, 19, all of the Bronx; and Kevin R. Taveras, 20, of Brentwood, had been charged with five counts of first-degree rape.

They told CBS 2 HD's Kathryn Brown on Wednesday night they were happy to be released after spending three nights in jail, but did not offer opinions on the accuser. They said they did not know the accuser and had no idea why she would make up such accusations.

Felipe said he's just relieved the entire ordeal is over.

"I'm actually very happy that the truth finally came out," Felipe said. "I'm blessed. My family is here right now to pick us up and I'd just like to thank everybody for your support out there. The truth is finally out.

"I prayed to God on the inside that everything would work out. I actually thought everything was going to go down bad. It feels so horrible when you are innocent and then you are going down like you are guilty.

When asked if he had any reaction to the fact that the woman lied about the incident, Felipe took the high road.

"Basically I have no hard feelings toward her. I don't know why she did it. I don't know her so I don't want to say anything bad about her," Felipe said. "I grew up in an all-women household. I have sisters. All my women are aunts. I respect women. I would never disrespect women, so being accused of that hurt me and my brother, you know? I'm just happy that everything is finally out in the open and we get to go home."

As of late Wednesday night, the district attorney had not decided whether to press charges against the woman. A press conference will be held Thursday morning.

Police on Long Island had been searching for a fifth man said to be involved in the rape, but that has also been called off.

The shocking announcement undoubtedly will ease tensions at Hofstra, where students told CBS 2 HD on Wednesday they were somewhat fearful and had taken notice of heightened security measures enacted by the school.

Hofstra Vice President of University Relations Melissa Connolly released the following statement:

To the Members of the Hofstra Community:

We have been notified by the Nassau County District Attorney's Office that the young woman involved in the alleged rape incident has recanted her claims against the five young men.

This week has been a very difficult one for our entire community, and we will need time to heal and understand the events of the last few days. As additional information becomes available we will post it on the University home page.

I understand the policy reason behind not publishing the names of an alleged rape victim while publishing the names of the accused rapists. I understand it, even if I don't agree with it.

But I cannot understand why they are still publicizing the names of the accused rapists while still refusing to name the accuser, after it has been established that they are the victims and she is the criminal?

I'm not a fan of mandatory minimums, but in false accusation situations such as this, the accuser needs to face some time. This reminds me of the Duke Lacrosse case, if the accused hadn't come from money, they'd be sitting in jail cells right now. As far as I know, not much happened to their girl that accused them of rape, though the DA was disbarred.

Duke Lacrosse, The Steeler’s QB two more examples of False Rape Accusations. There is a pattern here of Attention Whoring Women. Or Women who are in legal hot water looking for an excuse a “Get out of Jail” Free Card. When Women make false accusations they dilute the legitimacy of future Victims real damages. She should be criminally charged and sent to Jail.

Feminists maintain Women never lie about Rape. We know the opposite is true. It is time to stop this circus of False Accusations.

This can’t be. For years, the feminist organizations have told us no woman would lie about rape, that acknowledging their victim status was so traumatic no woman would ever lie.

CONSENSUAL! What a girl. The campus “doorknob”. Everyone gets a turn.

From Wikipedia:

Crystal Mangum graduated from North Carolina Central University in May 2008, with a degree in police psychology. On August 22, 2008, a press release announced the planned publication in October 2008 of a memoir by Mangum titled "The Last Dance for Grace: The Crystal Mangum Story".

Granted, the woman in question needs to be charged butthe guys in question leave a bit to be desired in the character department ...

... the alleged victim of the sexual assault admitted that the encounter that took place early Sunday morning was consensual.

... Basically I have no hard feelings toward her. I don't know why she did it. I don't know her so I don't want to say anything bad about her," Felipe said. "I grew up in an all-women household. I have sisters. All my women are aunts. I respect women.

So, he respects women so much that he doesn't mind him and 4 of his friends pulling train on a stranger ... that's some really upstanding behavior IMHO [/sarcasm off

Twisted world view alert:

"I'm actually very happy that the truth finally came out," Felipe said. "I'm blessed. My family is here right now to pick us up and I'd just like to thank everybody for your support out there. The truth is finally out.

This guy is "blessed" that he took part in a gang bang and that "the truth is finally out.

"I prayed to God on the inside that everything would work out. I actually thought everything was going to go down bad. It feels so horrible when you are innocent and then you are going down like you are guilty.

This guy "prayed" to God after he participated in a gang bang because he was innocent.

This guy respects women. Plus "everything is finally out in the open and we get to go home." Back to respecting "all my women".

Amen, Khankrum! Someone dear to me was raped, and the effects were long-lasting and far reaching. Bogus charges of rape only make it harder for legitimate victims to prosecute their case.

Everyone is assuming that the guy took part in a gang bang on the woman. Yet, the only real data we have is that the woman is a self admitted liar. So maybe the guy is telling the truth and *he doesn't even know her*, didn't participate in the gang-bang, never saw her before and just was picked up as "the guy two doors down" or whatever.

There isn't enough information to say for sure, and given that she lied about the rape why is everyone assuming her new story is true?

I always get a sick feeling in my stomach when I hear about rape and even see scenes like that in movies, which I think are completely unnecessary. I get an even sicker feeling that the encounter was consensual though. It’s beyond me that any self respecting woman would desecrate her body like that, then again, she probably wasn’t a self respecting woman.

You're right, she "has admitted to making the entire story up". I inferred that she meant the rape allegations. If that is the case, I take back what I wrote.

Rejecting Christian culture will do that to a society.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (New International Version)
19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

that acknowledging their victim status was so traumatic no woman would ever lie

No doubt it IS traumatic for a woman who actually IS a victim of rape. All the more reason why this lying skank should be punished in ways that make her wish she'd never been born.
