Las Vegas, NV (AHN) - A resort hotel in Las Vegas' CityCenter development project has become the world's largest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold Certified building.
CityCenter, which is being developed by MGM Mirage and Infinity World Development Corp, a subsidiary of Dubai World, said Monday the ARIA's resort hotel tower, convention center and theater as well as the Vdara Hotel received the LEED@ certifications from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The 4,004-room ARIA resort hotel, the core of the 18-million-square-foot development, will open in December.
The LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. Meeting the rigorous environmental standards of LEED Gold Certification is a testament to the complete integration of sustainable principles throughout the design and construction of ARIA and Vdara, and the remainder of CityCenter.

With a glut of 17,000 unused rooms in Vegas this week it will be interesting to see how many will stay at the “city center “ when it opens ! ( in December ?)
Click the start arrow at the left on the link. 180 degree view of what your FUTURE looks like. That’s really quite sterile, IMHO. Where are the ‘green spaces?’ Where are the animals? LOL!
I’m in Retail. There truly ISN’T going to be a Christmas this year; for ANY of us!
I doubt people are going to be flocking there. *SHRUG*
You won’t have to remind me to never step foot in that place.
This green and global worming stuff alienates me from the get-go.
How about a plan to replace our current bulbs with a bulb that contains mercury?
What happens when millions of those start getting thrown in city dumps and land fills, leaching into the water supply?
Beautiful buildings by top architects. Sadly, the project is on hold and the low economy cannot support it.
To those exploiting the theme, green is the color of money ... nothing more.
Shysters, scam artists and con men, all of ‘em.
Silly, ain’t it?
I’ve always lived a really ‘green’ life. I lived out of a tent or a barracks or a vehicle or a foxhole for 20 years of my life in the Army. I DO remember the last few years, especially when we went on field ops, we had ‘inspectors’ of sorts certifying that we weren’t dumping chemicals or equipment into the local waterways. *Rolleyes*
I mean, really. How can anyone be expected to even fight and win a war these days without breaking things and tearing up a little of the landscape? It boggles the mind.
And after that, I married into a farming family and I’ve lived on a farm for the past 15 years. Since then I have been an organic chicken farmer, market gardener and orchard owner. I can’t imagine anyone living a more simple and ‘green’ life than I do...and all without giving it a second thought, LOL!
Concrete and steel give me the willies! I’m not going to be a very Happy Camper if I have to live “in town” in my Golden Years. :(
“To those exploiting the theme, green is the color of money ... nothing more. Shysters, scam artists and con men, all of em.”
You nailed it! :)
You’re doing the right things naturally. I think that’s great. I do think people should be conscientious, but we’ve got fools coming out of the woodwork these days.
We had a 105 degree afternoon a few weeks back. The city called to make sure I was refraining from using my power. I hung up and turned the A/C dial cooler.
And that's the good part of cfb's. The bad part is when they break in your home , releasing deadly mercury vapour that goes right to your brain.
The last time I was “in” Vegas was the time it took to drive by on the freeway.
Lost Wages.
We got one recently from the city. My dad wanted it, so I gave it to him. I didn’t want that trash in my house.
He thinks he’ll save a penny here and there and I can’t talk sense to him.
The project is not on hold and will open in December as planned. However, you are correct that the economy cannot support it. CityCenter will just end up stealing customers from MGM's other properties.
I conserve energy by creating no demand for Lost Wages. They don’t need an a/c room for me in the desert.
But cooling that much space, using less energy, is worthwhile goal and accomplishment.
People who try to improve mankind’s existence are due some recognition.
Auto racing improves passenger vehicles.
This complex might open doors for cheaper, more energy efficient home air conditioning.
Space program was an example, where consumer products we use today got started back then.
* disclosure. I have never lived in an air conditioned home. I live one mile from the Pacific ocean. I work in an office without heat or a/c. I am used to adapting my expectation, to what is available. Stay out of the desert in summer.
“The city called to make sure I was refraining from using my power. I hung up and turned the A/C dial cooler.”
What gall! I’d have done the same, LOL!
“Stay out of the desert in summer.”
Excellent advice! :)
