WASHINGTON -- A group of American Indians who find the Washington Redskins' name offensive wants the Supreme Court to take up the matter. The group late Monday asked the justices to review a lower court decision that favored the NFL team on a legal technicality. The seven Native Americans have been working through the court system since 1992 to have the Redskins trademarks declared invalid. A U.S. Patent and Trademark Office panel ruled in their favor in 1999, but they've since suffered a series of defeats from judges who ruled that the plaintiffs waited too long to bring their suit in the first place. A lawyer for the group says he'd like to see the court decide once and for all whether the Redskins name defames Native Americans.

All this PC nonsense is just stupid already.
Fine.
Then change the name of the team to the ‘Washington THINSKINS!’
Should be just about right!
You mean in a nation with millions of native Americans, 7 of them are offended? LOL!
They are too stupid to understand that the name was meant as a compliment. That the team thinks enough of “Redskins” to want to fight like them.
PC people are just plain mean and stupid.
I live near a rez.
Do these people think that this is the biggest problem facing Native Americans???
I was going to post my usual libertarian response to this story, but all I can say is... THESE PEOPLE MUST HATE AMERICA!
As a Native American, I declare it honors us, not defames us. Therefore, these plaintiffs don’t speak for Native Americans as a whole, just themselves.
Exactly, they want to eradicate all references to our heritage and what we've symbolically stood for (in this case, strong fighters.)
Plaintiffs, you are hereby permitted to be offended.
NEXT!
I’m still pissed that the Washington Bullets changed their name.
People don’t name sports teams after Indians because they despise them. They name them after Indians because they admire them. This kind of thing is just plain stupid.
The only reason that “murder raid” part was funny is because as tough as the old guy was, you can’t raid very well using a walker no matter how tough your ancestors.
Regards
Dear Dan Snyder,
If they rule against you, just change your team’s name to the Washington Wise Latinas
Sincerely....
Wish my wife felt that way. For whatever reason Redskins and Seminoles bother her. She thinks the Seminole tribe is a sellout for letting Florida State use the name.
Good point about the Seminole tribe in Florida letting Florida State use the name. The NCAA has come out with regulations on the Indian nicknames and mascots in recent years. If I recall correctly, Florida State got an exemption because the Seminole tribe approved the use of the name.
Thank You.
I have a Brother-in-Law whose part Cherokee, and he always seems to have an axe to grind against the evil white man. You know, if someone wants to call me whitey, that’s fine. If someone wants to call me a cracker, that’s fine. It doesn’t bother me.
My Sister-in-Law is dating a black guy. We joke around with him all the time about not being able to see him in the dark, that the only way we know he’s there is when he smiles. And you know what - he laughs with us. He takes it in stride. He understands that we’re just joking around. Everyone is cool.
We’re too damn sensitive anymore. Relax, stop taking meaningless labels so seriously and enjoy life a little. You’ll find you enjoy it more.
It’s not really a problem with most Indians.
It’s just some of the PC ones that are getting their panties in a bunch.
Holy socks! If they keep this up the state of Wisconsin will have to change the name of towns, and roads!
This is a bunch of BS!
Well, in 1971 Stanford changed their nickname from the Indians to the Cardinal (not Cardinals...what’s with that??), so the PC with names goes back at least that far. If Indians were still their name, would they have needed the approval of every tribe in America?
