WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration is unveiling plans to require higher efficiency standards for cars and trucks and tougher rules on vehicle greenhouse gas emissions.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson planned to release the proposed regulations Tuesday. They call for the auto industry's fleet of new vehicles to average 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. The plan follows up on President Barack Obama's announcement in May that the government regulations would link emissions and fuel economy standards.
The Obama administration estimated earlier this year the requirements would cost up to $1,300 per new vehicle by 2016 but take just three years to pay off the investment and save about $2,800 over the life of the vehicle through better gas mileage.

I want alternative fuel! I demand it! Now!
I want a car that runs off hot air. There is enough coming out of DC and the media to fuel the US and Europe.

....if I hear one more Lefty extoll about the European auto experiance I’m gonna puke....you know the type person I’m talking about....always gushing about how European cars are so much more efficient because gas is $9.00 a gallon....yada yada yada.
....but the bottom line is that the Obama administration would like to force us all behind the wheel of those little putt putt cars.

I’m sure Honda and Toyota can meet these standards.

3x=1300 x = 433, so if the life time savings is 2800 then 2800/433 is 5.5 (rounding off) so the life of one of these cars is 5 and one half years? Jeeez, what a piece of crap!

"Proposed Rules?"
That means folks of good will and who love freedom should send in their comments to the entity putting out the proposed regs. They are, afterall, accountable to us, and have solicited comments.

These people are a bunch of hypocrites. After watching Rep. Steve King and Rep. John Carter calling for the investigation of Charlie Rangel on C-Span last night, I watched a few minutes of Rep. Barbara Lee and others with the Black Caucus talking about how the U. S. needs to give Africa more aid. According to Lee, we should give Africa more money (It seems America is in such great shape that our elected officials can spend hours talking about helping other countries) because of the vast amounts of oil there. I guess she's talking about bribing the thug dictators and getting a kickback. Anyway, I thought the left wanted us off oil. I thought our use of oil was killing the Doo Doo Birds and Mammoths. Why are they so interested in drilling for oil in Africa when they won't let anyone drill here?

If that’s the case, then turbo-diesels will be very common.

If thats the case, then turbo-diesels will be very common. I have a V8 Duramax in a 3/4 ton pickup. With a few modifications, I have 550RWHP and can get 22-23 MPG running empty at 65MPH.
No reason a passenger coupe with a 4 cylinder turbo diesel can't get 50MPG.
