California disability applicant arrested after video shows her bowling

A state worker who applied for a disability pension claiming that anxiety, chronic pain, and fatigue left her virtually unable to leave home or lift a coffee cup to her lips has been arrested after she was videotaped bowling in Elk Grove.

Lisa Trevino-Angelo, 38, was arrested without fanfare and charged by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office on Aug. 8. She will be arraigned Thursday.

The former Department of Motor Vehicles personnel specialist faces a misdemeanor count of filing a false claim and one count of making false statements and submitting false information to get benefits from the California Public Employees' Retirement System, court documents show.

Trevino-Angelo did not return calls to her home, but her attorney Michael Wise said she's innocent. "She has a legitimate medical condition," Wise said. "She's not trying to steal anything from anybody."

Brad Pacheco, a CalPERS spokesman, declined to comment because the case is in the courts but said criminal charges are rare in disability frauds. "Most are handled administratively," Pacheco said.

A CalPERS investigation report stapled to Trevino-Angelo's arrest warrant says she applied for a disability pension in July 2008 after working part time at DMV since 2001.

I am sure SEIU or whatever public employee union she is in will protect her and her job for life.

They use to do this when I worked in the law department at UPRR. Sometimes they would brag about their getting the money from the railraod . . . and their honest, hard working neighbors would turn them in to us. :)

Not surprised. I know someone - notice I do not call her a friend - who has managed to get a shrink to sign off on her total disability due to the stress of commuting from Fredericksburg Virginia to Washington DC for ten years.

she applied for a disability pension in July 2008 after working part time at DMV since 2001.

She was only working part time when she decided that she didn't want to work anymore?

I feel like I'm living in a bizarro world...

Leftists don’t even look at the fraud, abuse, and waste in a gov’t program,

their only criteria is how many of those who really need the aid get it. And if they have to have 50% fraud in order to get 99% coverage, they’ll take that over 10% fraud and 90% coverage.

Yes, but the stress of this investigation and fraud will boost her case and it will be re-instated.

My company used a HUGE amount of unskilled (and unmotivated) labor on our packaging lines. We’d routinely see “repetitive stress disorder” and had about 15% or more of our employees on some sort of “modified duty” or other.

When someone filed a fishy claim, we’d be sure to hire a guy to follow them around.

One line operator had a side business in excavation and construction. Sure enough, we caught him on the roof, laying shingles when he was on Workmen’s Comp.

Fired him ASAP and forwarded the tapes to the state AG and WC offices.

Public-sector disability is tailor-made for abuse. Migraines, chronic fatigue, low back pain... it's always the kind of malady that can't be disproved.

My father got disability when his legs went numb up to his knees. He got frostbite at Bastogne and was treated at the field hospital, but when his unit was ready to move on he laced up his boots and went along. Then he was treated again when the war ended and and several more times over the years.

60 years after the Battle of the Bulge his doctor asked why he never applied for disability. He told them he was working for all those years. "It's not right to take disability if you can still work, right?"

Well, the doctor put him in for disability and now at age 87 he has few extra dollars in his pocket to make life a little more comfortable.

That's the difference between his generation and this current crop of freeloaders. What's really distressing is that no matter how much free loading they get away with, it's never enough.

Most state workers on “disability” are 100% fakes, in my experience.

Not defending the woman, but can you see these types of cases happening? When the job market is being destroyed by leftist policies, what are people going to do? They’re simply going to stop working and join the public teat or work under the table. And in some ways, I don’t blame them.

We caught one of our workers’ comp employees shingling his roof, too. Even had video. We lost in court. He used the somewhat new defense of “he was having a good day”. Then they claim they could not do anything the next day due to the pain.
