Toronto - US filmmaker Michael Moore on Monday urged supporters of President Barack Obama to champion his proposed health care reforms and not let a vocal opposition minority steal the debate.
"I feel bad for President Obama and what he's going through ... trying to bring help to people who have a hard time getting help," Moore said.
"All those tens of millions of people who voted for him, where are they? Who's got his back?
"I see the minority out being vocal," he said. "But where's the majority? Where are the people that voted for Obama? Where are the people who wanted this?"
Obama has vowed to pass legislation by the end of the year that would spread health coverage to America's 47 million uninsured by making insurance obligatory and affordable for all.
$900bn
Republicans jump on the $900bn price tag, which Obama claims he can make up in savings, and stoke fears that a mooted public option would lead to a federal takeover of health care - anathema to many Americans who abhor the idea of big government.
Saturday saw the first big anti-Obama protests since he became president in January.
"Perhaps part of the problem is that his (Obama's) plan only goes half way and it's hard to get your base of support excited about half-measures," Moore said on the sidelines of the Toronto film festival.
"Had he gone the whole way and just said, 'We need a single player system,' ... I think he would have a lot more support from the people who (helped elect him)," he said.
Moore, in Toronto for the North American launch of his latest documentary Capitalism: A Love Story, also knocked opponents of the reforms, mocking US advertisements that depicted "Canada as a third-world country".
The television spots had "people lined up out the door of doctors' offices waiting in line for nine months, dying of brain tumours on the sidewalks of Toronto," he said, before bursting into laughter.
Can you imagine the increase in taxpayer expense when Mickey is on the socilised medicine dole?
Yeah, being an illegal alien is a real bitch.
Well that changes everything for me. I now support the public option and 0bamacare. Fully.
FUBO could honor kill his daughters and people like Michael Mooron would support him
Zero doesn’t have a majority supporting him anymore. Many of ‘em came over to our side, moron.
Making insurance obligatory is UNCONSTITUTIONAL! Insurance is a contract. No citizen can be coerced by the government into entering into one. 13th Amendment.
Michael Moore = Jabba the Putz
and I care because....
You fat pant load. You are too stupid to figure it out that those people who voted for him were looking for a free lunch not healthcare.
Yo, Jabba. Unfortunately for you we’re counting the votes, not weighing them.
It’s back up to 47 million?
Well, Mikey,
nothing is stopping you from paying for someone else’s health insurance.
Pony up or shut up.
And I’m REALLY surprised he isn’t getting the concept of “free lunch”.
Looks like he’s had more than his share.
Wonder if Michael supports O’s thoughts about obesity?
Moore personally plans to fly his obese hairy butt to Cuba for first class free medical care....
