"I was looking at people's arms and hands, thinking, 'I could draw from that,'" Dowell said.
It's all part of training he and a select cadre of officers in Idaho and Texas have received in recent months to draw blood from those suspected of drunken or drugged driving.

Meds legal or not an booze tests will give em the DNA data base they really seek. That could be one problem. Another is that we have to trust them to follow proper procedures. Another is that following proper procedures under field conditions may not be possible. Another is that some people have bad reactions to having blood drawn. another is that some people may refuse for having a morbid fear of needles. Another is that they shouldn't be doing this at all.

I have bad veins, and some doctors have problems with getting blood. I cannot image a non-medical person trying to dig around in my arm.

And I can imagine me over-acting like a fat, bald, Jim Carrey, twisting and flopping and screaming in feigned pain as the cop repeatedly tries to stick me.

Should this become prevalent, that's what we'll get.

I would, quite seriously, blow the crap out of anyone who approached me with a needle against my will.
Not that I drive drunk, but I do drive armed.

If they bring a needle up close to a perp (or me) there is a handy weapon. I can see jamming the syringe right up to the handle into someone’s eye socket.

I’m generally supportive of law enforcement. Your comment reminds me of a Jonah Goldberg post on NRO (I think it was him, I’m sure it was there) after the Gates incident. He said that he thought the pro-cop/anti-cop divide was very strong on the right.
Cops have a very hard job, that is what I think every time I watch cops. But I’d leave the needle jabbing to the medical pros!
