Democrats must drop efforts to censure a GOP representative who shouted "You lie" during President Obama's speech, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday.
Democratic leaders Thursday were looking into what formal action the House could take against Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., whose outburst during Obama's address on healthcare reform to a joint session of Congress the night before, shocked the chamber, The Hill reported.
"It's time for us to talk about healthcare, not Joe Wilson," said Pelosi, D-Calif.
One option Democrats considered was censure.
Pelosi nixed censure, as well as a call for Wilson to apologize on the floor.
"I'm on to healthcare reform. I'm not going to discuss Joe Wilson," she said. "I think his action spoke for itself. He has apologized. He will figure out what is appropriate for him to do."
After Obama told Congress that his healthcare reform plan would not permit illegal immigrants be eligible for public health insurance, Wilson shouted, "You lie," drawing boos from the floor and criticism from both sides of the aisle. Wilson later apologized.
Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson of Connecticut said Wilson should apologize.
"It's clear that the members of our caucus are quite upset and quite angry," Larson said after a caucus meeting. "We are also in the process of looking at what is appropriate conduct on the floor."
Obama, asked about the incident after meeting with his Cabinet, said Wilson "apologized quickly and with out equivocation, and I'm appreciative of that."
"I do think that, as I said last night, we have to get to the point where we can have a conversation about big, important issues that matter to the American people, without vitriol, without name-calling, without the assumption of the worst in other people's motives," he said
It did indeed. It remains to be seen exactly what effect this will have in the long term. Hopefully, Wilson's comment will reverberate throughout the debate and poison the bill.
We'll see.
I didn’t catch it but this appears to be the group
There is a video link but I don’t see a transcript yet.
CSPAN has the 17 minute streaming video clip
http://www.cspan.org/Watch/Media/2009/09/10/HP/R/22969/Lawmakers+React+to+Presidents+Health+Care+Speech.aspx
He makes a comment about talk radio etc “falsehoods” (lies in his view) at ~15:40
I can’t get streaming video here, so I can’t look up the exact quote, but he did say words to the effect that the Media should not cover the ‘extreme’ views....
(Really - I don’t think I’d hallucinate something like that.. ;))
I didn’t find that passage but I’ll keep an ear out for it in the future.
He’s a man who says he has a “healthy skepticism in organized religion” and yet we are not to question his honesty, integrity or intensions in pushing a partisan political agenda.
This is AWESOME — the unintended consequences of Democrats including Emmanuel attacking Wilson. He apologized for disrupting the speech but NOT for what he said — he stood by that.
Pelosi knows they don’t dare censure Wilson or it will open up a can of worms they don’t want in public aka Obamacare!

Dear Governor Perry,
On March 30, 2009 the Texas House of Representatives passed HCR 50 affirming that the State of Texas claims sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment.
You have publicly supported this bill, and stated that attorney generals from all over the union could be getting ready to sue the US Government.
We are asking you to take the lead.
We are asking you to order the Texas Attorney General to publicly begin working on a law suit under Article IV, Ninth, and Tenth Amendment of the Constitution.
We are asking you to protect the citizens of Texas that we will not stand for government controlled healthcare in our state.
Under your leadership we can effectively kill the proposal of this administration and allow Texas to be a state free from socialism and collectivism.
Be the voice of reason in the national debate and allow Texans the ability to solve the problems of our state.
Thank you,

Facts about the 10th Amendment:
The Tenth Amendment (Amendment X) of the United States Constitution, which is part of the Bill of Rights, was ratified on December 15, 1791. The Tenth Amendment restates the Constitutions principle of Federalism by providing that powers not granted to the national government nor prohibited to the states are reserved to the states or the people.
HCR 50 HAS PASSED THE HOUSE 99-36!
Affirming that the State of Texas claims sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States over all powers not otherwise enumerated and granted to the federal government by the U.S. Constitution, serving notice to the federal government to cease and desist certain mandates, and providing that certain federal legislation be prohibited or repealed.
Take Action! Before it is too late!
Wilson should consider censure a badge of honor. He should also ask for Ways and Means Chairman and tax cheat Charles Rangel to RESIGN IMMEDIATELY.
Joe Wilson should sponsor a bill that censures himself, and get the entire House GOP caucus to back it. A few Ds might.
Otherwise, in voting against it, the Ds would have to look like they approved of his action.
If he got it on the floor, then he could do what Nazi P. is afraid of...air his grievances.
Rats booed, hissed and sat on their hands during Bush’s addresses to joint sessions of congress.
Pelsoi should censure him - she would win. He was rude to interrupt obama’s propaganda speech, and even though he was right, telling the truth is no defense.
Every GOP rep should keep YouTube copies of Dem boo-hiss sessions on their laptops, and bring 'em to every single meeting they attend, so that they can whip out the proof should anybody accuse 'em of being uncooth or whatever.
I agree. But pubs are too prissy and pantywaisted to do that not proper decorum and all that turn the other cheek crap they practice while the country goes down the toilet.
Interesting point. It would be the political equivalent of a cytokine storm, turning the donks’ own preconditioned “immune responses” against their own movement.
I am very proud to say that Joe is my congressman, and we are blessed to have a very conservative district.
The local news this morning is showing Clyburn (blech!) demanding that Wilson now apologize to the House for the breach of decorum or else face censure. I guess Clyburn didn’t get the Pelosi memo to back off on the calls for censure.
Nancy, just to make sure there is no misunderstanding on the matter, how about letting the Republicans resubmit their amendment your committee has already voted down that *explicitly* excludes illegals? Otherwise, I think we need to keep Joe Wilson on the front page..
Pelosi was unusually harsh in describing the CIA. “They mislead us all the time,” she said. Asked whether the agency had lied, Pelosi said yes.
Newt explains it here:
http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/stories/1998/09/10/transcripts/gingrich.floor.html
When Wilson apologized he took what he did off of the table. (even though the left is trying to work to country up into a tizzy over it) The discussion is about the lie and not about Wilson (although he gets the obligatory mention)
I agree....This IS too good. Almost the best of both worlds drawing attention to illegals and the lies.
