After a nearly 40-day recess that was anything but restful, House Democrats returned to work Tuesday still divided over health-care legislation as a leader of a group of fiscally conservative Democrats backed away from a proposal he supported before the recess. Rep. Mike Ross (Ark.) of the Blue Dog Coalition said he could no longer support any bill that included the creation of a public option, a key element of a proposal he helped craft in July in marathon negotiating sessions with party leaders and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.
"An overwhelming number of you oppose a government-run health insurance option, and it is your feedback that has led me to oppose the public option as well," Ross said in a statement to constituents.
Ross's disavowal of his version of the public insurance option, which liberals had said skewed too close to the insurance industry's wishes, leaves the Democrats scrambling to balance the competing ideological blocs in their caucus. Liberal Democrats say a vigorous public option would create competition in the health sector.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has stood in strong support of the public option, saying she cannot pass the overall health-care package without one because roughly 60 liberals have vowed to oppose the legislation if it does not include a "robust" version....

Are the blue dogs the same or different from the yellow dogs under Reagan?
“Heh heh.”
Do you support the rest of the bill?
Doesn’t matter. ANY bill that’s passed will have language to insert a mandatory public option later.
If the Blue Dogs are saying we won’t vote for a public option, and the yellow dogs are saying we won’t vote unless it has a public option, how much progress do you think they are going to make? The longer this drags out, the better. Why in the world would you think I support the rest of the bill? I would draw your attention to Title IV, for starters, in order to demonstrate why the bill is a really bad idea. I never thought to see the day I would have to explain heh heh to someone on FR. Or what? Did you only read the headline?
Ah, those home folks. They do do the electin’.
Yep, get out the popcorn and enjoy the show...
I don’t believe any of this, the are just smoke screening us...they will say no public option and will sneak it in some other way-—no way will Obama or the lib dems let this go, not this time. DO NOT TRUST WHAT THEY SAY BUT SCRUTINIZE ALL THAT THEY DO!
I feel like GOMEZ ADDAMS waiting for the trains to collide.
PErsonally...I hope they keep fighting with each other all through next year.
It needs to stay active just for an election issue. We need a whole mountain of crap on these people come November. Keep the pressure mounting day by day week by week.
Good to hear.
Sadly, I think my Blue Dog Rep, Baron Hill, will still vote for a bill with the public option.
We still need to pick off some more RAT votes if we want to defeat this monstrosity.
Well, my Blue Dog congresscritter is nothing more than a lap-dog to Nancy.
Sit, Dennis
Down, Dennis
Roll Over, Dennis
Good Dog, Dennis
Mmmmm—up for re-election?
I saw a video of one of his meetings. Poor you.
“......his version of the public insurance option....”
More smoke and mirrors, bait and switch or I say, flat out lies.
Key word, “version”. it will be there, but it will look different for the moment and it mat be called something else.
“Terrorists” no longer exist. We are no longer fighting a “war’, and on and on. Oh, and if only 1 RINO votes for this Health-con ( I figure no less than 5 or 6) it will instantly become bipartisan.
If the people don’t like it and get too loud, simply change it’s shape and rename it, then do what you wanted to anyway.
All House Members are elected every two years and Senators ever six years.
Quite different. Under Reagan the conservative southern dems were affectionately known as Boll Weevils. Yellow Dog dems on the other hand are staunch Dem party loyalists, in fact the Blue Dogs of today take their name from a reference to Dems being choked blue by left wing policymakers.
